Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 57 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade

Pearcleaner is a free Mac app cleaner that uninstalls applications together with their leftover files and searches for orphaned files. It also bundles managers for Homebrew packages, PKG installers, plugins and background services, an app updater, and tools that strip unused languages and architectures from apps. The source is public under Apache 2.0 with the Commons Clause. Its developer has put the project on hold, with version 5.4.3 the latest release.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Pearcleaner, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It does want Full Disk Access, plus a privileged helper for system folders.

The report card

Best for free Mac uninstalls that take the leftovers too

Pearcleaner is a free Mac uninstaller that removes an app with its leftover files, finds orphaned files and manages Homebrew packages and app updates. The big drawback: the developer stopped work at the end of 2025, and releases and issue replies are paused indefinitely. It needs Full Disk Access, isn't listed for macOS 27, and its license is source-available rather than open source.

ToolGPA report cardPearcleanerGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree, a download anyone can run from the GitHub releases page or Homebrew. The licence, Apache 2.0 with the Commons Clause, stops anyone selling it or a modified version.
Free plan and trialAEvery feature is free and there's no paid tier. Nothing is held back for an upgrade and there's no cap to hit.
FeaturesCCleaning up after apps is its job and it covers it: uninstall with related files, an orphaned file search, a monitor that tidies when an app hits the Trash, plus Homebrew, PKG and services managers. But the README says work stopped at the end of 2025, so this is as far as it goes.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but there's little to set up: drag an app in or pick it from a list, and a Finder extension adds uninstalling to the right-click menu. It does want Full Disk Access, plus a privileged helper for system folders.
Platforms and integrationsDMac only. The support table lists macOS 13 Ventura through 26 Tahoe, and macOS 27 doesn't appear in it. It works with Homebrew and Steam, and has a command line and deep links for automation.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Pearcleaner is for

  • Fits if you want leftover files removed when you uninstall a Mac app
  • Works for Homebrew users who want packages and app updates in one window

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want an app that's still being worked on, as releases and issue replies are paused indefinitely
  • Not for you if you're on macOS 27 or older than macOS 13, neither of which is in its support table
  • Tight if you're wary of permissions, since it needs Full Disk Access and a privileged helper for system folders
  • Not for you if you need open source: the Commons Clause license is source-available and bars selling it
  • Skip it if you're on Windows or Linux, as it's macOS only

Good to know

Good for

  • Mac users who want leftover files removed when they uninstall an app
  • Homebrew users who want packages and app updates in one window
  • People who want a free cleaner whose source code they can read

Worth knowing

  • Development is on hold: the README says work stopped at the end of 2025 and that issue replies, pull request reviews and new releases are paused indefinitely.
  • macOS only. The support table lists macOS 13 Ventura through 26 Tahoe; earlier versions are unsupported and macOS 27 does not appear in it.
  • It needs Full Disk Access to search for files and a privileged helper to act on system folders.
  • The developer calls the license source-available and fair-code rather than open source: the Commons Clause bars selling the app.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Pearcleaner is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

What you could not

  • Deleting system files without breaking anything.
  • A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
