The report card
Best for small US businesses mailing letters and parcels
PitneyShip is Pitney Bowes's shipping app for small US businesses, and its pull is the mix: discounted USPS, UPS and FedEx labels next to stamps and Certified Mail. Pay-as-you-go has no monthly fee but adds 5% to every label. A shop sending 200 parcels a month will probably want Premium at $34.99, which is dear for this category.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Premium is $34.99 a month with no usage fee and 10 users. Pay-as-you-go costs nothing a month but adds 5% to every label, which adds up fast over 200 parcels. We graded the $34.99: above the dearer quarter of this category, short of its very dearest. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Pay-as-you-go has no monthly fee, but 5% goes on every label, so it's never really free. Premium has a 30-day trial that rolls into $34.99 a month unless you cancel. |
| Features | B | Discounted USPS, UPS and FedEx rates compared by price or delivery date, batch labels, orders pulled from Amazon, eBay, Shopify and Etsy, and tracking shared with recipients. Stamps and Certified Mail come on top, which few rivals here do. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record for its iPhone and Android apps, so we go by the listing: you connect your stores and compare carriers, which is the ordinary setup for shipping software. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone, iPad and Android, with orders from Amazon, eBay, Shopify and Etsy and your own DHL Express account. No desktop app is listed, and the API needs a quoted Enterprise plan. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who PitneyShip is for
- Great if you send Certified Mail and letters as well as parcels from a US office
- Handy when you ship now and then and would rather pay per label than monthly
- Good for offices where several people ship and want one bill across USPS, UPS and FedEx
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you ship every day on pay-as-you-go, since 5% goes on every label
- Not for you if you ship from outside the US, as the discounted rates cover US shipping only
- Skip it if you need the API, which comes only with a quoted Enterprise plan
Good to know
Good for
- Small US businesses that send letters and Certified Mail as well as parcels
- Occasional shippers who want no monthly fee
- Offices with several users who need one bill across carriers
Worth knowing

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace PitneyShip you would be making discounted carrier rates and labels, which take an agreement with each carrier. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $419.88 a year.
What you could not
- Discounted carrier rates and labels, which take an agreement with each carrier.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Amazon, eBay and Shopify among them, and has an API.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. PitneyShip’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
