Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.0
GPA, above 103 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade
Planify is a task manager for GNU/Linux built with GTK4 and libadwaita. Tasks live in projects with sections, labels, priorities and reminders, and are stored locally in SQLite by default. It can also sync with a Todoist account or with Nextcloud and other CalDAV servers, which is how the same tasks reach other devices. The app is free under the GPL-3.0 license and is distributed through Flathub.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Planify, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It runs on donations and isn't made or supported by Doist, Todoist's maker.
- 1
Best for a full task manager on the Linux desktop
It only runs on Linux and has no sync service or phone app of its own, so on a phone you use the Todoist or Nextcloud apps.
- 2
It is free
Planify has no paid plan at all. Every feature is free under the GPL-3.0 license, with no subscriptions, ads or account. Development is funded by optional donations through Patreon, PayPal, Liberapay and Ko-fi.

- 4
Todoist, Nextcloud and CalDAV sync
Syncs with a Todoist account or with Nextcloud and CalDAV servers such as Radicale and Baïkal, with several accounts at once. Nextcloud Deck boards sync two-way as projects.
- 5
Projects, sections, labels and filters
Tasks are grouped into projects and sub-projects with sections, labels, priorities and custom filters, and each project shows a progress indicator.
- 6

A project can be shown as a board for visual planning, and calendar integration displays scheduled events next to tasks.

The report card
Best for a full task manager on the Linux desktop
Planify is a free, open-source task manager for the Linux desktop, with projects, sections, labels, a board view, reminders and repeating tasks, and it can sync with Todoist or Nextcloud. It only runs on Linux and has no sync service or phone app of its own, so on a phone you use the Todoist or Nextcloud apps. It runs on donations and isn't made or supported by Doist, Todoist's maker.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | A desktop app, and its command-line tool, downloaded from Flathub for nothing under the GPL, with no subscription, ads or account. Rivals in this category want $2.42 to $5.00 a month; Planify runs on donations. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free outright, with no paid tier holding anything back: every project, label, filter, reminder and the CLI are in the one free build, and there's no account to make either. |
| Features | B | It covers the category's job: projects and sub-projects with sections, labels, priorities and custom filters, a board view, calendar integration, several reminders a task, recurrence, attachments, Markdown, and a Quick Add that reads dates written in English or Spanish. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install from Flathub, start typing, tasks on your own disk, no account. A global shortcut opens Quick Add from any window, and connecting Todoist or Nextcloud is optional. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | One operating system: Linux, from Flathub or built from source, with no Windows, Mac, web or phone version at all. Syncing with Todoist, Nextcloud, Nextcloud Deck and CalDAV servers is the only way your tasks leave the desk. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Planify is for
- Fits if you want a native GTK task manager on your Linux desktop
- Works for Todoist or Nextcloud users who want a Linux desktop client
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you use Windows or a Mac, as it's Linux only
- Not for you if you want its own phone app, because tasks reach a phone through the Todoist or Nextcloud apps
- Tight if you want sync with nothing else involved, since Planify runs no sync service of its own
- Watch out: Planify isn't made, affiliated with or supported by Doist, the company behind Todoist
- Watch out: development runs on donations through Patreon, PayPal, Liberapay and Ko-fi
Good to know
Good for
- Linux users who want a native GTK task manager
- Todoist or Nextcloud users who want a desktop client on Linux
- Keeping tasks on the local disk with no account
- Scripting task capture and backups from the terminal
Worth knowing
- Linux only: it is distributed on Flathub or built from source, with no Windows, macOS, web or mobile version.
- It has no sync service of its own, so reaching tasks on a phone means using the Todoist or Nextcloud apps.
- Planify is not created by, affiliated with or supported by Doist, the company behind Todoist.
- Development is funded by donations; the site lists Patreon, PayPal, Liberapay and Ko-fi.

Planify's GPA of 3.0 is higher than 103 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade, and level with 9.
It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 87 of 123) and worst on platforms and integrations (D, above 0).
Planify has no paid plan.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.3 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Planify is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 103 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade.
What you could make
- Tasks, kanban boards, natural-language input and Markdown: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for Linux. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Todoist, Nextcloud and Nextcloud Deck among them.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Planify’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
