Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 8 of the 18 other course and community platforms we grade
Podia lets creators sell online courses, digital downloads, coaching, events and paid community memberships from their own website and blog. Email marketing with newsletters and automations is built in, priced by the number of subscribers. Podia Labs is an independent company that has been running Podia since 2014.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Podia, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Email is capped by subscriber count too, so a big list costs extra.
- 1

Podia gives you a website, blog, store, courses, community and email on one bill, and it's one of the friendlier all-in-ones.
- 2

The report card
Best for creators selling a mix of courses and downloads
Podia gives you a website, blog, store, courses, community and email on one bill, and it's one of the friendlier all-in-ones. Mover looks cheap at $42 a month billed yearly, but it keeps 5% of sales, so most sellers end up on Shaker at $84. Email is capped by subscriber count too, so a big list costs extra.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Mover is $42 a month billed yearly but adds a 5% fee, $100 on $2,000 of sales: $142. Shaker at $84 takes no fee, so $84 a month is what you'd pay, inside this category's usual range but above its dearer quarter ($59). Shaker includes 500 email subscribers. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. There's a 14-day trial of every feature with no card needed, and once you pay, refunds only within 72 hours of the latest payment. |
| Features | B | Courses with quizzes and certificates, downloads, coaching, events, a community with chat, a website and blog, checkout with tax for 230 jurisdictions, email automations and an MCP connection. No gap in the job; PayPal, Zapier and affiliates just need Shaker. |
| Ease of use | C | No App Store rating on record. Everything's in one place, which helps, but you still build a site, a store and your emails before selling. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, with Stripe, PayPal, Zapier, Zoom, Calendly, Kit, Mailchimp and Discord, plus MCP for Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. No phone or desktop apps listed. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Podia is for
- Great if you sell courses, downloads and coaching to one small audience
- Handy when your email list is still small, since email is priced by subscribers
- A treat if you'd like to run your store from Claude or ChatGPT over MCP
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you have a big list, as 10,000 subscribers adds $56 a month
- Skip it if you plan to stay on Mover, because 5% of every sale goes to Podia
- Not for you if your members expect a phone app, as none is listed
Good to know
Good for
- Creators who want site, store, community and email in one bill
- Small lists, since email is priced by subscriber count
- Sellers of a mix of courses, downloads and coaching
Worth knowing
- Mover adds a 5% Podia fee to each sale; Stripe or PayPal also charge their own fee of about 2.9% plus 30 cents.
- Plans include only 100, 500 or 1,000 email subscribers; 10,000 adds $56 a month billed annually ($70 monthly) on any plan.
- PayPal, Zapier, affiliate marketing, upsells and assistant seats need Shaker or Earthquaker.
- Refunds are given only within 72 hours of the latest payment; there is no free plan.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Podia you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $504 a year.
What you could make
- Online courses: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox.
- Email sent in volume that still reaches the inbox.
- A members' space with posts, chat and events that people keep coming back to.
- It plugs into other products, Stripe, PayPal and Zapier among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- People on the other end: coaches. No app builder makes those.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Podia’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
