Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 4 of the 16 other VPNs we grade
PureVPN is a subscription VPN from GZ Systems Limited of the British Virgin Islands, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android and extensions for Chrome and Firefox. One account covers up to 10 devices. Standard is the VPN with a tracker blocker, Plus adds a password manager, and Max adds data-broker removal, dark web monitoring and a small eSIM data allowance.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about PureVPN, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for a VPN with privacy extras on the same bill
PureVPN covers 10 devices and sells the VPN in three tiers, with a password manager on Plus and data-broker removal on Max.
- 2
Paid plans start at $4 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $47.95 per year at renewal (Standard), after a first 27 months for $58.20.
- 3
It runs on 5 platforms
macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.
- 4
Up to 10 devices
One account can be logged in on 10 devices at once. A Multi-login add-on gives 10 more.
- 5
Protocols and obfuscation
WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec, plus obfuscated servers that make VPN traffic look like ordinary HTTPS on networks that block VPNs.
- 6
Kill switch and split tunneling
The kill switch cuts the internet connection if the VPN drops, and split tunneling picks which apps go through the VPN.
- 7
A 2.2 GPA, above 4 of 16
That is against the other VPNs we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 8
Keep it
To replace PureVPN you would be making servers in dozens of countries, kept fast and private. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for a VPN with privacy extras on the same bill
PureVPN covers 10 devices and sells the VPN in three tiers, with a password manager on Plus and data-broker removal on Max. The 2-year Standard plan is $58.20 for the first 27 months and then $47.95 a year, one of the lower renewal prices here. There's no free way in, though: the 7-day trial costs $0.99 and rolls into a full year if you forget.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | The 2-year Standard plan bills $58.20 for the first 27 months, so two years cost about $2.43 a month, inside the cheaper quarter of VPNs. It then renews at $47.95 a year, below the middle. Monthly is $12.95. |
| Free plan and trial | F | Nothing free: no free plan, and the 7-day trial costs $0.99, then bills $47.95 for a year unless you cancel. The 31-day money-back guarantee isn't a trial either. |
| Features | B | 10 devices, WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2, obfuscated servers, a kill switch, split tunneling and a tracker blocker on every plan, plus a password manager on Plus. Port forwarding and dedicated IPs cost extra, but the core job is covered. |
| Ease of use | C | 4.36 from about 7,900 App Store ratings, under the 4.5 a B needs, and short of the 10,000 ratings that would let a 4.3 count. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android, and Chrome and Firefox extensions. There's no integration list or API on record, so it stops at B. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who PureVPN is for
- Great if you want a password manager or data removal billed with your VPN
- Handy when you need a dedicated IP or port forwarding, sold as add-ons
- Good for households with up to 10 devices on one account
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to try it free, as the trial costs $0.99 and then bills a year
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $12.95 a month for Standard
- Tight if you have more than 10 devices, which needs the Multi-login add-on
Good to know
Good for
- Households that need a VPN on up to 10 devices
- Buyers who want a password manager and data removal billed with the VPN
- People who need a dedicated IP or port forwarding as an add-on
Worth knowing
- Advertised prices cover the first 27 or 16 months only; plans then renew yearly at $47.95 to $89.95, depending on tier and term.
- There is no free trial. A 7-day trial costs $0.99 (Standard) or $1.99 (Max), then bills $47.95 or $89.95 for 12 months unless cancelled.
- Refunds fall under a 31-day money-back guarantee, subject to PureVPN's fair-use terms.
- PureVPN for Teams is sold separately, at $7 per user a month on annual billing, with a central dashboard.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace PureVPN you would be making servers in dozens of countries, kept fast and private. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 11 of the 16 other VPNs grade higher. It costs $47.95 a year.
What you could make
- Ad and tracker blocking: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Servers in dozens of countries, kept fast and private.
- A password vault, the last thing anyone should make for themselves.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. PureVPN’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
