Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 3 of the 21 other spreadsheet and database tools we grade
Quadratic is a spreadsheet in which cells can hold Python, SQL and JavaScript as well as formulas. Its AI answers plain-English questions by writing those cells and charts into the sheet, where each one can be opened and checked. Files connect to live databases and services such as Postgres, Snowflake and QuickBooks, and teams edit together in real time in the browser or in a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Quadratic, taken from its own pages and our grades.
You can ask in plain English, and generated cells can be opened and edited.
- 1
Best for analysts who want Python and SQL in a spreadsheet
Quadratic is a spreadsheet where a cell can hold Python, SQL or JavaScript next to formulas, and its AI writes cells and charts from a plain-English question.
- 2
Paid plans start at $18 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $18 per user / month, billed annually ($20 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Personal plan for individuals: a monthly AI message limit on the default model, with a limited number of editable files, connections and shares, and no file export.
- 4
It runs on 4 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows and Linux.
- 5
AI analysis in the sheet
Ask a question in plain English and the AI writes the formulas, Python or SQL cells and charts that answer it. Any generated cell can be opened and edited to check the work.
- 6
Python, SQL, JavaScript and formulas
Cells can run code as well as spreadsheet formulas, and the results are returned to the grid. The vendor says sorting, filtering and AI analysis stay fast at 100 million rows.
- 7
Live data connections
Connects to databases including Postgres, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery and MS SQL Server, and to QuickBooks, Plaid, Google Analytics and Mixpanel. CSV, Excel and PDF files can be imported.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 3 of 21
That is against the other spreadsheet and database tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Quadratic you would be making a spreadsheet engine with its formulas. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for analysts who want Python and SQL in a spreadsheet
Quadratic is a spreadsheet where a cell can hold Python, SQL or JavaScript next to formulas, and its AI writes cells and charts from a plain-English question. But it's $18 a seat a month, the free plan limits AI messages, files and sharing with no numbers published and won't export at all, AI credits are capped per seat, and Safari and Firefox get second-tier support.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | Pro is $18 a user a month billed annually, $20 monthly, against a $9.99 middle and a $13.00 dear quarter in this category. Exporting your own data to Excel or CSV is one of the things that needs it, which stings. Each seat does bring $20 in AI credits, and Business is $36. |
| Free plan and trial | C | The Personal plan is free for individuals, but rationed: a monthly limit on AI messages and a limited number of editable files, connections and shares, with no numbers published for any of them. And no export to Excel, CSV or .grid, so your work stays inside it. |
| Features | A | It covers the whole job and does what no rival here does: cells running Python, SQL, JavaScript and formulas side by side, an AI that writes them from a plain-English question and shows its work, live connections to Postgres, Snowflake, BigQuery, QuickBooks and Plaid, MCP agents and an API that read and write a sheet. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record, and the listing shows the learning curve: the work is in Python and SQL cells and in database connections you set up yourself. You can ask in plain English, and generated cells can be opened and edited. Chromium browsers get first-tier support while Safari and Firefox lag. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web plus a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that stays in sync, an API, self-hosting with Docker or AWS, and plugs into Snowflake, Google Analytics and Mixpanel. No phone apps are listed, so an A is out. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Quadratic is for
- Fits if you're an analyst who wants Python and SQL next to your formulas
- Works for data that lives in Postgres or Snowflake and that you want to query from a sheet
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying free, as AI messages, files, connections and sharing are all limited and there's no export
- Pricey if you just want a spreadsheet: $18 a seat a month is nearly twice what this category usually charges
- Not for you if you live in Safari or Firefox, which get second-tier support and are less performant
- Watch out: AI credits are a set $20 a seat a month on Pro, and only Business at $36 can buy more
- Skip it if you need single sign-on or a phone app: SSO is Enterprise only, priced on request, and no phone app is listed
Good to know
Good for
- Analysts who want Python and SQL next to spreadsheet formulas
- Teams querying a database or data warehouse straight from a spreadsheet
- Students, teachers and researchers, who get the Education plan free
Worth knowing
- The free Personal plan limits AI messages, editable files, connections and sharing, and has no export to Excel, CSV or .grid.
- Paid plans include a set AI credit allowance per user each month; only Business can buy more usage on demand.
- Single sign-on is listed only on the Enterprise plan, which is priced on request.
- Chrome and other Chromium browsers get first-tier support; Safari and Firefox are second-tier and less performant.

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
3/21
Other spreadsheet and database tools it is graded above
Quadratic's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 3 of the 21 other spreadsheet and database tools we grade, and level with 4.
It stands best on features (A, above 19 of 21) and worst on value for money (D, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $18 a month for each person, against a middle price of $8 for the category: 18 of the 20 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.0 out of 4. 2 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Quadratic you would be making a spreadsheet engine with its formulas. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 14 of the 21 other spreadsheet and database tools grade higher. It costs $216 a year.
What you could not
- A spreadsheet engine with its formulas.
- Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Snowflake among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features A, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Quadratic’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
