Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 57 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade
Rectangle is a free, open-source macOS utility that moves and resizes windows with keyboard shortcuts or by dragging them to snap areas at the screen edges. It covers halves, thirds, quarters and sixths, moving windows between displays, and other common layouts. The same developer sells Rectangle Pro, a separate paid app built on top of it with more ways to snap and arrange windows.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Rectangle, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: drag a window to an edge and it snaps, or press a shortcut.

The report card
Best for free window snapping on a Mac
Rectangle is a free, open-source Mac app that snaps windows into halves, thirds, quarters and sixths by shortcut or by dragging to a screen edge. Saved workspaces, custom sizes, window throwing, stashing and iCloud sync are all kept for Rectangle Pro, a separate paid app whose price isn't shown as text. Its own pages also disagree on the minimum macOS: 10.15 or 14.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free and open source, a download anyone can run, with nothing to buy inside it. The same developer sells Rectangle Pro as a separate app, but nothing in Rectangle itself costs money. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The whole app is free: keyboard shortcuts, drag-to-snap areas, menu bar commands, halves to sixths, display switching and Todo Mode. No cap, no nag, nothing held back. |
| Features | C | Window snapping is its one job: halves, quarters, thirds, fourths and sixths, maximize, almost maximize, centre, restore and a command to send a window to the next display. Its own comparison page names the gaps: window throwing, custom sizes, saved workspaces and iCloud sync are Pro. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: drag a window to an edge and it snaps, or press a shortcut. Coming from Spectacle? You can pick its default shortcuts on first run. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Mac only, and no integrations are listed. The website says macOS 10.15 or later, while the GitHub README says the newest release needs macOS 14. Nothing for Windows or Linux. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Rectangle is for
- Fits if you want windows snapped by shortcut or by drag at no cost
- Works for former Spectacle users who want to keep the same shortcuts
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you're on Windows or Linux, as it's macOS only
- Too light for saved workspaces, custom window sizes, window throwing or stashing, which are only in Rectangle Pro
- Not for you if you want your settings synced over iCloud, another Rectangle Pro extra
- Watch out: the website says macOS 10.15 or later, but the GitHub README says the newest release needs macOS 14
- Watch out: Rectangle Pro's price isn't shown as readable text; it has a 10-day trial and a 3-device license
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users who want window snapping by shortcut or drag at no cost
- Former Spectacle users who want to keep the same shortcuts
- People who prefer open-source utilities
Worth knowing
- macOS only. The website lists macOS 10.15 or later, while the GitHub README says the newest release needs macOS 14.
- Window throwing, custom sizes and positions, saved workspaces, window stashing and iCloud sync are only in Rectangle Pro, a separate paid app.
- Rectangle Pro's price is not shown as readable text on the site. It has a 10-day free trial, and one license can be active on 3 devices.

Its own comparison page names the gaps: window throwing, custom sizes, saved workspaces and iCloud sync are Pro.

- Spectacle-compatible shortcuts
- Rectangle is described as nearly a complete drop-in replacement for the Spectacle app, and Spectacle's default shortcuts can be chosen on first run.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Rectangle is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.
What you could not
- Control over other apps' windows.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
What this rests on. Rectangle’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
