Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 48 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

Recurrence is an app for iPhone, iPad and Mac that tracks the tasks that repeat in everyday life, such as chores, bill payments and renewals. Each item keeps a history of when it was completed, with notes attached to the item or to a single completion, and items can be shared with other people through iCloud. The app is a free download limited to five tasks; a Premium subscription or a lifetime purchase removes the limit.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Recurrence, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It's Apple devices only, sync needs the same Apple ID on each device, and English is the only language.

The report card

Best for chores and bills that keep coming round

Recurrence tracks things that repeat, like chores, bills and renewals, and keeps a history of each time you did them. The free version stops at five tasks, so most people will need Premium at $7.99 a year or the $19.99 Lifetime Unlock. It's Apple devices only, sync needs the same Apple ID on each device, and English is the only language. Look elsewhere if anyone you share chores with uses Android.

ToolGPA report cardRecurrenceGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyA$7.99 a year is about 67 cents a month, well under the $1.45 that marks the bottom of this category's prices. Or $19.99 once for the Lifetime Unlock, against roughly $48 for a year on the category's middle plan.
Free plan and trialCA free download with no ads, and then a wall at five tasks. Bins, rent, filter, car tax, haircut, and you're full. Anything more means Premium or the lifetime unlock.
FeaturesCIt does its one job completely: repeats on a schedule or from the last time you did it, a lock so you can't tick it early, a history with notes on each completion, categories, widgets and iCloud sharing. But that job is much smaller than this category's, with no projects or lists of ordinary tasks.
Ease of useB4.7 on the App Store, though from 326 ratings, and a top mark wants that score from a thousand people. There's nothing to learn, mind: a list of things that come round, with widgets on the Home and Lock Screen.
Platforms and integrationsCOne family of devices: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision, with iCloud and Siri Shortcuts. No Android, Windows or web version, and anyone you share a chore with needs an Apple device too.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Recurrence is for

  • Fits if you keep forgetting when you last did something, since each task keeps its history
  • Works for chores shared over iCloud with someone else on an Apple device

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if anyone in the house uses Android or Windows, as it's Apple devices only
  • Tight if you're staying free, because the free version stops at five tasks
  • Watch out: sync and sharing need the same Apple ID on each device and free iCloud storage
  • Too light for work projects or ordinary to-do lists, since it only tracks things that repeat
  • Not for you if you want the app in a language other than English, the only one listed

Good to know

Good for

  • Chores, bills and renewals that come around on a schedule
  • Keeping a record of when something was last done
  • Couples or families sharing recurring tasks on Apple devices

Worth knowing

  • The free version stops at five tasks; more needs Premium or the $19.99 Lifetime Unlock.
  • Apple devices only: the App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision, with no Android, Windows or web version.
  • Sync and sharing run through iCloud; the support page says devices must use the same Apple ID and have free iCloud storage.
  • The App Store listing gives English as the app's only language.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.

You could make the core of Recurrence for yourself: tasks and habit tracking. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $7.99 a year it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could make

  • Tasks and habit tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • Hooks into the device itself: widgets, Siri, Shortcuts and the lock screen.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. Recurrence’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
