Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 3 of the 36 other read-later and bookmark apps we grade
Reeder is a feed reader for iPhone, iPad and Mac that combines RSS feeds, videos, podcasts and social media posts in a single timeline. Instead of unread counts, it syncs the reader's timeline position across devices through iCloud, along with subscriptions and tagged items. The current app is free for up to 10 feeds with an optional subscription, and the older Reeder Classic is still sold separately as a one-time purchase.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Reeder, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Tracking your place by scroll position rather than read and unread also takes getting used to if you've come from anything else.
- 1
Best for one timeline of feeds on Apple devices
Reeder puts feeds, videos, podcasts and social posts in one timeline on iPhone, iPad and Mac for $14.99 a year, and it tracks where you stopped scrolling instead of what you haven't read.
- 2
Paid plans start at $1.25 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $14.99 per year, or $1.99 per month (US App Store).
- 3
There is a free plan
The free version has nearly all features but is limited to 10 feeds, with no OPML import, no Shared Feeds and no Mastodon, Bluesky or Micro.blog home timelines.
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
macOS and iOS.
- 5
Unified timeline
RSS feeds, videos, podcasts and social media posts appear in one timeline. Items can be opened in other apps when you want the full client.
- 6
Synced timeline position
Reading progress is tracked by scroll position instead of read and unread states, and it syncs for the home timeline, filters, folders and single feeds.
- 7
Filters
Build custom timelines that include or exclude posts by keyword, media type or feed type. The built-in Audio and Video timelines are filters.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 3 of 36
That is against the other read-later and bookmark apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for one timeline of feeds on Apple devices
Reeder puts feeds, videos, podcasts and social posts in one timeline on iPhone, iPad and Mac for $14.99 a year, and it tracks where you stopped scrolling instead of what you haven't read. Free stops at 10 feeds with no OPML import. There are no unread counts, no sync beyond iCloud, and nothing for Windows, Android or the web, so anyone outside Apple should look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | $14.99 a year is $1.25 a month, and reading apps here start at $2.42 a month in the lowest-priced quarter, so it costs about half of that. One subscription covers iPhone, iPad and Mac, and paying monthly is $1.99. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free gets you nearly every feature, but only 10 feeds, which is a cap anyone with a reading habit will hit in a week. No OPML import either, so bringing a list over from another reader means paying, and there's no trial of the paid version. |
| Features | C | The basics are here: one timeline for feeds, videos, podcasts and social posts, filters, tags, saved links and Shared Feeds. The listing names two gaps, though, and they're not small ones: no unread counts at all, and no third-party sync services, so syncing is iCloud or nothing. |
| Ease of use | C | 4.28 from 882 App Store ratings, which is middling for a feed reader and the lowest of the Apple readers here. Tracking your place by scroll position rather than read and unread also takes getting used to if you've come from anything else. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | One family of devices: iPhone, iPad and Mac, with iCloud sync and home timelines from Mastodon, Bluesky and Micro.blog. No web, Windows or Android version is listed, and no API. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Reeder is for
- Fits if every device you read on is an iPhone, iPad or Mac
- Works for readers who'd pay $14.99 a year to mix feeds, videos and podcasts in one timeline
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you use Windows, Android or a web browser, as it's iPhone, iPad and Mac only
- Not for you if you like watching an unread count drop, because Reeder has none
- Tight if you stay free: it stops at 10 feeds, with no OPML import, Shared Feeds or social timelines
- Watch out: third-party sync services aren't supported, so syncing is through iCloud or not at all
- Watch out: the older Reeder Classic is sold separately ($4.99 on iPhone and iPad, $9.99 on Mac), so check which app you're buying
Good to know
Good for
- Apple users who want feeds, videos and podcasts in one timeline
- Readers who would rather pick up where they left off than clear unread counts
- People who want syncing to stay inside their own iCloud account
Worth knowing
- Apple only: it runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, with no web, Windows or Android version listed.
- The free version stops at 10 feeds and leaves out OPML import, Shared Feeds and social home timelines.
- There are no unread counts, and third-party sync services are not supported; syncing is through iCloud.
- Reeder Classic, the older app, is sold separately as a one-time purchase: $4.99 on iPhone and iPad, $9.99 on Mac.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A read-later list at its plainest is saved links with tags.
You could make the core of Reeder for yourself: rSS reader, read later and bookmarks. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $14.99 a year it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.
What you could make
- RSS reader, read later and bookmarks: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
What this rests on. Reeder’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
