2.6
GPA, above 32 of the 69 other writing tools we grade
Reedsy Studio is a browser-based app for planning, writing and formatting books, made by the company behind the Reedsy freelancer marketplace. The manuscript editor, real-time collaboration with tracked changes, and export to EPUB and print-ready PDF are free. Two paid add-ons, Craft and Outlining, add unlimited version history, advanced writing stats, custom goals and unlimited planning Boards.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Reedsy Studio, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Nothing to install, at least, and the export is built in rather than a second app to learn.

The report card
Best for writing and typesetting a book for free
Reedsy Studio lets you write a book in your browser and export it as an EPUB and a print-ready PDF at no cost, with a co-author working in the same manuscript. It runs only in a browser and can't be used offline yet. The free plan keeps 30 days of history and one Board in card view, Boards can't be shared, and dark mode and unlimited history are paid add-ons.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | The writing, the collaboration and the typesetting to EPUB and print-ready PDF all cost nothing, which is the whole job of the category for free. The Craft add-on is $4.99 a month and Outlining $7.99; both together is $10.99, about what one ordinary writing tool costs. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free covers the manuscript editor, unlimited books and devices, import, and EPUB and print-ready PDF export, so one person could live there. It isn't open-ended, mind: one manuscript goal, 30 days of writing history, 1 Board in card view and no dark mode. |
| Features | C | The core is all there and free: a book sorted into sections, chapters and scenes, real-time collaboration with comments and tracked changes, and EPUB 3 and print-ready PDF in three themes and four trim sizes. But its own FAQ names the gaps, no offline use yet and Boards you can't share. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and this is a web app where the work is the book you build: sections and chapters to lay out, Boards to fill, goals to set. Nothing to install, at least, and the export is built in rather than a second app to learn. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Browser only. No desktop app, no dedicated mobile app, no offline use according to Reedsy's FAQ, and the listing shows no integrations or API, so there's nothing to lift it past the one place it runs. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Reedsy Studio is for
- Fits if you're self-publishing and want EPUB and print-ready PDF files without paying for them
- Works for an editor or co-author working in the same manuscript with tracked changes
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you write without internet, as it can't be used offline yet
- Not for you if you want a desktop or phone app, because it runs only in a browser
- Tight if you plan heavily and stay free, since that gets you 1 Board in card view and 30 days of history
- Watch out: Boards can't be shared with a collaborator yet, according to Reedsy's FAQ
- Watch out: dark mode, custom goals and advanced stats sit in add-ons at $4.99 and $7.99 a month
Good to know
Good for
- Self-publishing authors who want EPUB and print-ready PDF files at no cost

- Dark mode, custom goals and advanced stats are only in the paid add-ons.
- Boards cannot be shared with a collaborator yet, according to Reedsy's planning FAQ.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A writing app at its plainest is a page that saves what you type.
You could make the core of Reedsy Studio for yourself: long-form writing and templates. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $52.99 a year.
What you could make
- Long-form writing and templates: an app builder makes these well.
- It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.
What you could not
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
What this rests on. Reedsy Studio’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
