Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 5 of the 65 other focus apps we grade

Regain is a study-focused app blocker and timer for Android and iPhone, built mainly for students preparing for exams. A focus session blocks the apps you choose until the timer ends, Strict Mode stops you from quitting early, and on Android it can limit YouTube to chosen study channels and block Reels and Shorts. The core app is free, and Regain Pro adds extras such as premium themes, focus music and further strict-blocking options.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Regain, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The core is free with unlimited sessions.

    Android and iOS.

  5. 5

    Focus sessions that block apps

Starting a session blocks the apps you picked until the timer ends. On iPhone this runs through Apple's Screen Time, so Regain does not see the names of the apps you block.

  6. 6

    Strict Mode

With Strict Mode on, a session cannot be ended early, and on Android the app cannot be uninstalled until the focus time is over. On iOS Strict Mode is a Pro feature.

  7. 7

The report card

Best for students who need their phone locked while they study

Regain is a study timer that locks your distracting apps until the session ends, built mainly for students. The core is free with unlimited sessions. But the US App Store lists Pro at three monthly and seven yearly amounts, from $29.99 to $149.99 a year, the YouTube and Reels tools are Android only, the iPhone app needs iOS 26, and there's no desktop version.

ToolGPA report cardRegainGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDThe US App Store lists Pro at $9.99, $14.99 and $19.99 a month, and at seven yearly amounts from $29.99 to $149.99, with nothing to say which one you'd be offered. The monthly figures start well above this category's $3.99 middle, and the top yearly price is three times its going rate.
Free plan and trialBThe core app is free: unlimited focus sessions, a stopwatch, app blocking during sessions and focus stats. A student could live on that. On iPhone it's thinner, because Pomodoro, Strict Mode, themes and focus music are all Pro.
FeaturesCSessions that block the apps you pick, a Strict Mode you can't quit early, Pomodoro lengths you set and focus sounds. The extras are the catch: YouTube cut down to your study channels, Reels and Shorts blocking and focus groups with a leaderboard are all described for Android only.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record for it. Using it is three steps, though: pick the apps, start the timer, and they stay shut until it ends. The iPhone app does need iOS 26 or later.
Platforms and integrationsCAndroid and iPhone, so phones only, with no desktop or web version and nothing it connects to. The iPhone app wants iOS 26 or later.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Regain is for

  • Fits if you're revising for exams with your phone sitting next to you
  • Works for Android users who need YouTube for lectures and nothing else

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you study on a laptop, as there's no desktop or web version
  • Tight if you're on iPhone and staying free, because Pomodoro, Strict Mode and focus music all need Pro
  • Not for you if you want a clear price up front, since the App Store lists three monthly and seven yearly amounts for Pro
  • Not for you if you're on iPhone and want YouTube Study Mode, Reels blocking or focus groups, as they're described for Android
  • Watch out: the iPhone app needs iOS 26 or later, and the refund policy quotes Android prices in rupees only

It stands best on free plan and trial (B, above 41 of 65) and worst on value for money (D, above 0).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Regain you could make: Pomodoro timer and time tracking. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 48 of the 65 other focus apps grade higher. It costs $29.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Pomodoro timer and time tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Blocking that reaches every browser and app and is hard to switch off.
  • A library of sound you would have to license.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. Regain’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
