Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 129 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

RemNote is a note-taking app aimed at students that turns notes into flashcards and schedules them for review with spaced repetition. It also handles PDF annotation, handwritten notes on tablets, tables and an exam scheduler that plans daily practice around a set exam date. AI features such as flashcard and quiz generation, a tutor chat and lecture transcription draw on a monthly credit allowance that depends on the plan.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about RemNote, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Notes, flashcards and sync are free with no cap, but PDFs, handwriting and exams get a few uses on Free.

Cards come back for review on a spaced schedule. The exam scheduler sets a daily practice plan around an exam date; the Free plan allows 1 exam.

The report card

Best for students who revise from their own notes

RemNote is a notes app built for exam revision: you mark lines in your notes and they become flashcards on a spaced schedule. Notes, flashcards and sync are free with no cap, but PDFs, handwriting and exams get a few uses on Free. The big AI allowance sits on the $18 a month plan, credits don't carry over, the iPhone app lists Pro at $14.99, and the $395 lifetime deal covers server features for only 5 years.

ToolGPA report cardRemNoteGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCPro is $8 a month billed yearly ($96), or $10 month by month, which puts it in the upper half of this category: the middle is $6 and the dear quarter starts at $8.25. Buy it inside the iPhone app and the store lists $14.99. The $395 lifetime licence only covers server features for 5 years.
Free plan and trialBUnlimited notes, flashcards and synced devices, free for good, and plenty of students could stop there. Not an A, because the rest is sampled rather than given: 3 annotated PDFs, 1 handwritten document, 1 exam and 250 AI credits a month.
FeaturesAFlashcards written inside the same outline as the notes, spaced repetition, an exam scheduler that plans daily practice around a date, PDF and slide markup, handwriting on a tablet, AI that makes cards and quizzes from a PDF, and it works offline. No rival here builds revision into the notes like this.
Ease of useA4.8 from about 1,600 App Store ratings, which is the top band. Cards live in the same outline as your notes, so there's no second app to keep in step. AI credits are the fiddly part: they reset monthly and don't carry over.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and a browser extension, with every plan syncing unlimited devices. That's the full spread of devices, but the listing shows no API and only Claude and Codex as integrations, which is what keeps it off an A.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who RemNote is for

  • Fits if you're studying for exams and want notes and flashcards in one app
  • Works for courses built on PDFs and lecture slides you need to mark up

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you just want a notebook, because the whole thing is built around revision
  • Pricey if you lean on the AI, as the 20,000-credit plan is $18 a month billed yearly, and credits don't carry over
  • Tight if you won't pay, with 3 annotated PDFs, 1 handwritten document and 1 exam on Free
  • Watch out: buying in the iPhone or Android app can't use discounts, and the App Store lists Pro Monthly at $14.99
  • Watch out: the $395 Life-Long Learner deal covers server features and AI credits for 5 years, not for life

  • The Life-Long Learner license covers Pro server features, such as larger uploads and AI credits, for 5 years rather than for life.
  • Subscriptions bought in the iOS or Android app cannot use discounts, and the App Store lists Pro Monthly at $14.99.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of RemNote you could make: notes, linked notes, web clipper and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 129 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade. It costs $96 a year.

What you could make

  • Notes, linked notes, web clipper and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Databases with views, filters and links between them.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: handwriting.
  • The depth: we grade its features A, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. RemNote’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
