Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 22 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

RightNote is a note organizer for Windows from Bauerapps. A notebook is split into pages, each with its own hierarchical tree of notes, and a note can be rich text, plain text, source code, a spreadsheet or an attachment depending on the version. It comes as a freeware version plus paid Standard and Professional versions, and Professional can sync selected notes with Evernote.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about RightNote, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The only homework is working out which of the three versions holds the note types you want.

The report card

Best for filing notes in deep trees on a Windows PC

RightNote is a Windows notes organizer where each notebook page holds its own tree and a note can be text, code, a spreadsheet or a file. There's a freeware version and one-time licenses at $29.95 and $59.95 with 12 months of updates. The freeware has no images, tables or spell checker, it runs only on Windows, and reaching notes on a phone means Evernote Sync on Professional only.

ToolGPA report cardRightNoteGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAStandard is $29.95 once and Professional $59.95 once, each with 12 months of updates, and the software keeps working after they stop. A year of the middle note app here is $72, so even the dearer version comes in under that, paid once. Another year of Pro updates is $34.95.
Free plan and trialCThe freeware is free for personal and commercial use, with rich text, code and memo notes, live search, tags and AES protection. But the Rich view editor is held back, so no images or tables in a note, and there's no spell checker. You'll meet that wall the first time you paste a picture.
FeaturesCPages that each hold a tree, note types from rich text and code to spreadsheets, outlines, task lists and journals, search that highlights as you type, and reading inside attached PDFs on Pro. The gap is sync: none of its own, so phone access means pushing notes into Evernote, on Professional only.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, so we go by the listing: a normal Windows install with nothing to connect, and a portable build that runs from a USB stick. The only homework is working out which of the three versions holds the note types you want.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system, Windows. To see notes on a phone, Mac or browser you sync selected notes to Evernote and read them there, and that's limited to the Professional version. It also imports and exports Excel files.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who RightNote is for

  • Fits if you file notes in deep, multi-level trees on a Windows PC
  • Works for keeping code, spreadsheets and text notes side by side in one notebook

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you use a Mac or want a phone app, as it's Windows only and phone access goes through Evernote
  • Tight if you're staying on the freeware, because there's no spell checker and no images or tables in the editor
  • Watch out: Evernote Sync, journals, outlines, task lists and multi-notebook search need Professional at $59.95
  • Watch out: updates stop after 12 months, and another year for Professional is a $34.95 upgrade license
  • Pricey if you want every update forever, at $139.95 for lifetime upgrades on top of a Pro license

Good to know

Good for

  • Windows users who file notes in deep, multi-level trees
  • Evernote users who want their notes arranged in a tree
  • Keeping spreadsheets, code and text notes in one notebook

Worth knowing

  • Windows only; reaching notes from a phone, Mac or browser relies on Evernote Sync, which is limited to the Professional version.
  • A license includes 12 months of updates. The software keeps working afterward, but more updates need an upgrade license ($34.95 for Professional).
  • The freeware version has no spell checker, spreadsheet or attachment notes, or the Rich view editor with images and tables.
  • Journal, outline and task list notes, multi-notebook search and saved web pages need Professional at $59.95.

RightNote's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 22 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade, and level with 27.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace RightNote you would be making a spreadsheet engine with its formulas. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 98 of the 147 other note-taking apps grade higher. It costs $29.95, paid once.

What you could make

  • Notes, tasks and daily notes: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A spreadsheet engine with its formulas.
  • A real app for Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. RightNote’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
