Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 4 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade
Rize is an automatic time tracker for macOS and Windows. It records the apps and websites you use in the background, uses AI to sort that time by category, client and project, and reports on focus and billable hours. Team plans add manager dashboards, and the vendor says it does not take screenshots or log keystrokes by default.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Rize, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card
Best for automatic tracking with focus tools built in
Rize tracks your apps and websites in the background and uses AI to sort the time by client and project, with focus music, break reminders and site blocking. There's no free plan after a 7-day trial, Basic is $9.99 a month, client reports, the API and Zapier need Pro at $23.99, teams pay $29.99 a seat for at least 2, and it only tracks on Mac or Windows, with phones on Enterprise only.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | Basic is $9.99 a month billed annually, $12.99 monthly, which is the dear end of this category before you've asked for anything. Client reports, the API and Zapier need Pro at $23.99, nearly four times the going rate, and teams pay $29.99 a seat with a 2-seat minimum. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The 7-day trial has every feature and needs no credit card, but a week isn't long to judge a tracker you'd bill from. After that it's $9.99 a month or nothing. |
| Features | B | Automatic tracking with AI sorting by category, client and project, for billable hours and timesheets, plus focus detection, distraction blocking, focus music and break reminders. There's a chat agent you can ask about your time, and profitability views for teams. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: it runs in the background with no timers and no manual entry, and the AI does the sorting rather than you writing rules. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Computers only: Mac, Windows and a browser extension, with no web app and no phone app, since mobile is listed under Enterprise alone. Linear, ClickUp, Asana, Slack, Zoom and calendars connect, but the API, webhooks and Zapier start on Pro. Linux is down as coming soon. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Rize is for
- Fits if you bill by the hour and don't want to run manual timers
- Works for teams that want client and project time without screenshots
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you just want a simple tracker, at $9.99 a month with no free plan
- Skip it if you need to track from a phone, as a mobile app is listed only under Enterprise
- Not for you if you're on Linux, which is only down as coming soon
- Pricey if you need client reports, the API or Zapier, which start on Pro at $23.99 a month
- Watch out: Team plans need at least 2 seats at $29.99 each, and AI credits are capped on every plan

- Team plans carry a 2-seat minimum at $29.99 per seat a month billed annually.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Rize you could make: time tracking. What surrounds it you could not. The 6 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 35 of the 42 other time tracking apps grade higher. It costs $119.88 a year.
What you could make
- Time tracking: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A library of sound you would have to license.
- Blocking that reaches every browser and app and is hard to switch off.
- A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Linear, ClickUp and Asana among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Rize’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
