Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 4 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade
Roam Research is an outliner for networked note-taking. Notes are written as bullet blocks in daily notes and pages, and any page or block can be linked or referenced from elsewhere, so a graph of connected ideas builds up over time. It is sold by subscription with a 31-day trial and no free plan; paid plans cover unlimited graphs and collaborators.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Roam Research, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The trial is only for people who never had a plan, there's no Android or Windows app, and the local API works only in the desktop app.
- 1
Best for bullet notes where every line can be linked
Roam is an outliner for linked notes: you type bullets into a daily note, and any bullet or page can be linked or pulled into another.
- 2
Paid plans start at $13.75 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $15 per month, or $165 per year ($13.75 a month).
- 3
You can try it first
31-day free trial, available only if you have never had a plan.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, macOS and iOS.
- 5
Bidirectional links and block references
Pages link to each other in both directions, and individual blocks can be referenced from other notes.
- 6
Daily notes
Writing starts in a dated daily note, and links from there connect entries to the rest of the graph.
- 7
Hosted, offline and encrypted graphs
A graph can be hosted in Roam's cloud or kept offline as a local-only graph, and graphs can be encrypted. Paid plans allow unlimited private or public graphs.
- 8
A 2.0 GPA, above 4 of 147
That is against the other note-taking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it

The report card
Best for bullet notes where every line can be linked
Roam is an outliner for linked notes: you type bullets into a daily note, and any bullet or page can be linked or pulled into another. There's no free plan, and after a 31-day trial it's $15 a month, against a $6 middle in this category. The trial is only for people who never had a plan, there's no Android or Windows app, and the local API works only in the desktop app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | $15 a month, or $165 a year, which works out at $13.75. The dearest tenth of this category starts at $9.99 and the middle is $6, so Roam is well inside the expensive end. Two things soften it: collaborators cost nothing extra, and Believer is $500 once for 5 years, about $8.33 a month. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan at all. There's a 31-day trial, but only if you've never had a plan, and nothing on record says whether it asks for a card. After that you pay or you stop. |
| Features | C | It does networked outlining completely: two-way links, block references, daily notes, graphs you can host, keep offline or encrypt, unlimited collaborators, Roam Depot extensions and an MCP server. But that's a narrower job than note-taking, and the local API behind the MCP server and CLI works only in the desktop app. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record, and the listing shows a product you configure: hosted, offline or encrypted graphs to choose between, extensions to install from Roam Depot, and a way of working built on blocks and references rather than pages you just type on. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, Mac and iPhone, with an API, an MCP server and extensions. No Android and no Windows app on the listing, and the local API the MCP server and CLI rely on only works in the desktop app, not on the web. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Roam Research is for
- Fits if you think in bullets and want every one of them to be linkable
- Works for a group sharing one graph, since collaborators aren't charged per seat
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a free plan, because after the 31-day trial there isn't one, and the trial is for first-timers only
- Pricey if you only want linked notes, at $15 a month against a $6 middle in this category
- Not for you if you're on Android or Windows, as the listing has no app for either
- Watch out: the lowest monthly rate needs $500 up front for the 5-year Believer plan
- Watch out: the local API behind the MCP server and CLI works only in the desktop app, not on the web
Good to know
Good for
- People who work from daily notes and want every block to be linkable
- Researchers who reference and reuse individual blocks across notes
- Groups sharing a graph who do not want to pay per collaborator
Worth knowing
- There is no free plan; after the 31-day trial a paid subscription is required.
- The lowest monthly-equivalent price, the Believer plan, is a single $500 payment covering 5 years.
- The local API used by the official MCP server and CLI works only in the desktop app, not the web version.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Roam Research you could make: notes, linked notes and daily notes. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 136 of the 147 other note-taking apps grade higher. It costs $165 a year.
What you could make
- Notes, linked notes and daily notes: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Claude and Cursor among them, and has an API.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
What this rests on. Roam Research’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
