Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 4 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade

ScreenFlow is a Mac-only app from Telestream that records the screen, camera and microphone at the same time and then edits the result on a multi-track timeline. It adds titles, transitions, animations, annotations and captions, and exports to formats such as MP4, ProRes and animated GIF. The app is sold as a one-time license, with an optional stock media subscription and paid upgrades between major versions.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about ScreenFlow, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, and a multi-track timeline with nested clips and markers is a thing you learn, not a thing you open.

The report card

Best for recording and editing tutorials on a Mac

ScreenFlow records your Mac's screen, camera and mic together, then gives you a multi-track editor in the same app, with titles, transitions, annotations and captions. It's $199 once. It's Mac only, new major versions are paid upgrades, the license allows one activation, stock media is a separate $99 a year, and the trial watermarks every export.

ToolGPA report cardScreenFlowGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyB$199 once, no subscription. This category's middle plan is $10 a month, so that's under two years of renting something similar, and it keeps working after. New major versions cost again: $79 from version 8 or 9.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. The trial never expires, but every exported video carries a watermark until you enter a license, and nothing in the listing says it asks for a card.
FeaturesBScreen, camera and mic recorded together and in sync, then real multi-track editing with nested clips, transitions, animations, annotations and a caption editor, out to MP4, ProRes or GIF. Record and edit both covered, with nothing missing.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and a multi-track timeline with nested clips and markers is a thing you learn, not a thing you open. Styles and templates help if you make the same sort of tutorial repeatedly.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system: macOS, with no Windows version at all. It records an iPhone or iPad screen from the Mac and takes UVC capture cards, but no integrations are listed.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who ScreenFlow is for

  • Fits if you make software tutorials and product demos on a Mac
  • Works for people who'd rather pay $199 once than subscribe

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you're on Windows, as ScreenFlow runs only on macOS
  • Not for you if you hate paying twice, since new major versions are paid upgrades, $79 from version 8 or 9
  • Pricey if you want the Stock Media Library, because that's a separate $99 a year with no refunds
  • Tight if you use two Macs, as the $199 license allows one activation
  • Watch out: the Mac App Store version gets no upgrade discounts and has sandbox limits on some virtual cameras

Good to know

Good for

  • Mac users making software tutorials and product demos
  • Trainers and teachers who record and edit in one app
  • Buyers who want a one-time license instead of a subscription

Worth knowing

  • ScreenFlow runs only on macOS; there is no Windows version.
  • ScreenFlow 10 is a paid upgrade for owners of earlier versions, and the $199 license allows one activation.
  • The Stock Media Library is a separate $99-a-year subscription, and its purchases and renewals are non-refundable.
  • The Mac App Store version gets no upgrade discounts and has sandbox limits on some virtual cameras.

Part 04 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

4/52

Other screen recording and video tools it is graded above

ScreenFlow's GPA of 2.2 is higher than 4 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade, and level with 6.

It stands best on value for money (B, above 31 of 52) and worst on platforms and integrations (D, above 0).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace ScreenFlow you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 42 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools grade higher. It costs $199, paid once.

What you could make

  • Templates: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • A video editor.
  • Recording the screen with its sound, and somewhere to keep the video.
  • A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. ScreenFlow’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
