Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 11 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade
Screenity started as a free, open-source Chrome extension for recording the screen, camera and microphone, with drawing and blur tools and no account. A paid web editor now sits on top of it: recordings are arranged as scenes, clicks become zooms, speech is captioned word by word, and the result is shared as a link or exported. The service is hosted in Europe and built by a solo founder.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Screenity, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, but the recorder is a Chrome extension that needs no sign-in: add it and press record.
- 1
Best for a free Chrome recorder with no account
Without Pro, recordings only save to your device or Google Drive, with no editing or share links.
- 2
Paid plans start at $10 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $10 per month, billed yearly ($120); $14 billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan

- 5
Free Chrome recorder
Records a tab, a window, a custom area or the whole screen with camera, microphone and tab audio. It needs no sign-in, has no recording limit and saves locally or to Google Drive.
- 6
Drawing, blur and cursor spotlight
While recording you can draw with a pen, arrows, shapes and text, blur anything private on the page, and dim everything except the cursor.
- 7
Scene-based editor
A Pro video is built from separate scenes that can be recorded on their own and reordered. Scenes can be split, trimmed, cut in the middle and sped up.

The report card
Best for a free Chrome recorder with no account
Screenity is a free, open-source Chrome extension that records your screen, camera and mic with no account and no time limit, plus a paid web editor at $10 a month billed yearly. Without Pro, recordings only save to your device or Google Drive, with no editing or share links. Pro caps recordings at 1 hour and exports at 1080p, captions are English only, and the trial charges after 7 days.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $10 a month billed yearly ($120), or $14 by the month, which lands exactly on this category's middle price. One plan holds everything: editor, auto-zoom, captions, share links and unlimited 1080p exports. |
| Free plan and trial | B | The Chrome extension is free and open source with no account, no recording limit, drawing, live blur and a cursor spotlight. You could live on that. What you can't do free is edit, host or share a link, and the Pro trial charges after 7 days unless you cancel. |
| Features | C | The recording and scene-editing job is done fully, with zooms from your clicks, word-by-word captions and device frames. But the listing's own limits bite: captions in English only, recordings capped at 1 hour and exports at 1080p. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but the recorder is a Chrome extension that needs no sign-in: add it and press record. The editor runs in the same browser with nothing else to install. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | A Chrome extension and a browser editor, and that's all: no desktop app, no phone app, and Google Drive is the only integration on record. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Screenity is for
- Fits if you want a free recorder with no account and no time limit
- Works for product walkthroughs built from several short scenes, on Pro
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you need share links for free, as sharing by link needs Pro
- Not for you if you want a desktop or phone app, since it's a Chrome extension and a browser editor
- Tight if you caption in other languages, because captions are English only for now
- Too light for long recordings or 4K, as Pro stops at 1 hour per recording and 1080p exports
- Watch out: the 7-day Pro trial charges you unless you cancel before it ends
Good to know
Good for
- People who want a free recorder with no account and no time limit
- Privacy-minded teams that want their videos hosted in Europe
- Product walkthroughs built from several short scenes
Worth knowing
- Sharing by link, the editor and cloud storage all need Pro; the free extension only saves to your device or Google Drive.
- Pro recordings are limited to 1 hour each and exports to 1080p.
- Captions are available in English only at present.
- The recorder is a Chrome extension and the editor runs in the browser; no desktop or mobile app is listed.

Places it runs: Web and Browser extension
Open-source Chrome screen recorder with a scene-based editor. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: open source, transcription, templates, screen recording, video editing.
The recording and scene-editing job is done fully, with zooms from your clicks, word-by-word captions and device frames.

- Auto-zoom from clicks
- Clicks made while recording with the extension become zoom keyframes in the editor. Each one can be retimed, removed or added by hand.
- Word-by-word captions

11/52
Other screen recording and video tools it is graded above
Screenity's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 11 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade, and level with 16.
It stands best on free plan and trial (B, above 40 of 52) and worst on features (C, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $10 a month, against a middle price of $10 for the category: 21 of the 41 others that charge start lower.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Screenity you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 25 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools grade higher. It costs $120 a year. Screenity is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A video editor.
- Recording the screen with its sound, and somewhere to keep the video.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
What this rests on. Screenity’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
