Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 43 of the 69 other writing tools we grade
Scrivener is a writing app for long manuscripts such as novels, theses and scripts. A project is split into sections that sit in a binder next to notes and research files, and those sections can be rearranged as index cards on a corkboard or as rows in an outliner before being compiled into one document. It is sold as a one-time license for each platform, with no subscription.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Scrivener, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Syncing the iOS app means a Dropbox account too.
- 1
Best for long manuscripts you keep rearranging
The iOS app has no trial and syncs only through Dropbox, there's no Android or web version, and Compile takes work to learn.
- 2
What it costs
Paid plans start at $23.99 one-time (iOS); $59.99 one-time for macOS or Windows.
- 3
You can try it first
Free trial on macOS and Windows that lasts for 30 days of use, not 30 calendar days. No trial of the iOS app.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
macOS, Windows and iOS.
- 5
Binder
Keeps manuscript sections, notes and reference material in one sidebar, so a long text is written and navigated in small pieces.
- 6
Corkboard and outliner
Every section has an index card with a synopsis. Moving cards on the corkboard or rows in the outliner reorders the manuscript itself.
- 7
Compile
Exports the assembled manuscript to formats including Microsoft Word, RTF, PDF, Final Draft and ePub, with formatting applied at export.
- 8
Refunds: 30 days
Scrivener is bought once, so there is nothing to cancel and nothing to renew. Buy from Literature & Latte's own store and the FAQ says refunds are given within 30 days, and there is a free trial that counts 30 days of actual use before that.
- 9

The report card
Best for long manuscripts you keep rearranging
Scrivener is an app for long manuscripts: you write in small sections, move them as index cards on a corkboard, then compile the lot into one document. It's $59.99 once for Mac or Windows and $23.99 for iPhone and iPad, each bought separately, and a major upgrade costs again. The iOS app has no trial and syncs only through Dropbox, there's no Android or web version, and Compile takes work to learn.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | $59.99 once for macOS or Windows, covering every computer in your household on that platform. That's seven months of this category's $8.33-a-month middle, paid once and done. You do pay per platform: iOS is $23.99, the Mac and Windows bundle $95.98, and a major upgrade costs again. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The Mac and Windows versions have a free trial that counts 30 days of use, not 30 calendar days. There's no trial of the iOS app at all. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole job and nothing in its own notes flags a gap in the writing: a binder for sections, notes and research, a corkboard and outliner where moving a card reorders the book, snapshots before a rewrite, word targets, a scriptwriting mode, and Compile for Word, PDF, Final Draft or ePub. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and this is a big app with a lot of furniture: a binder to organise, a corkboard to lay out, and Compile's formatting to work out before the manuscript comes out the way you want. Syncing the iOS app means a Dropbox account too. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | macOS, Windows, iPhone and iPad, each bought separately, so computer and phone are both covered. No Android, Linux or web version is listed, and Dropbox is the one integration, being how the iOS app syncs with the desktop. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Scrivener is for
- Fits if you're managing a novel or a thesis and want to write it in small pieces
- Works for writers who restructure a lot and would rather pay once than subscribe
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you write on Android, Linux or in a browser, as none of those is listed
- Pricey if you want it on Mac, Windows and iPhone, because each one is a separate license
- Not for you if you don't want Dropbox, since that's how the iOS app syncs with the desktop
- Watch out: a license doesn't cover major versions, so a future Scrivener 4 means paying for an upgrade
- Watch out: there's no trial of the $23.99 iOS app, only of the Mac and Windows versions
Good to know
Good for
- Novelists and academics managing book-length projects
- Writers who restructure a draft by moving scenes and chapters around
- People who want to pay once instead of subscribing
Worth knowing
- Each platform needs its own license: the macOS, Windows and iOS versions are bought separately.
- The store sells versions for macOS, Windows and iOS only; no Android, Linux or web version is listed.
- Sync between the iOS app and the desktop versions runs through Dropbox and needs a Dropbox account.
- A license does not cover major version updates; moving from Scrivener 3 to a future Scrivener 4 means buying a discounted upgrade.

Things most people miss, each from its own help pages
The things about Scrivener that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from Scrivener’s own pages, linked beside it.
Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from Literature & Latte's site (the crossgrading page, its Novel November 2026 guide, and blog posts on snapshots, shortcuts, revision mode, iOS syncing and exporting) on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.
- 1
Pay less
Own it on Mac or Windows? The other version is $37.95
Literature & Latte's crossgrading page says owners of one platform's licence can buy the other for $37.95 instead of $59.99. Open the trial of the version you want, click "Have Scrivener for…?" and enter your serial number. It doesn't work for Mac App Store purchases or licences over 5 years old.

Code NOVEMBER26 takes 20% off until 7 December
Its Novel November 2026 guide gives the code NOVEMBER26 for 20% off Scrivener for macOS or Windows in its own online store, valid until 7 December. Writers who reach 50,000 words in Novel November get 50% off a Standard Licence instead. The code isn't offered for iOS.

Shortcut
Press Cmd-5 before a big rewrite to keep the old version
Command-5 on a Mac or Ctrl+5 on Windows takes a snapshot of the selected document, and Command-Control-5 or Shift+Ctrl+5 lets you give it a title. Name it something like "before cutting the flashback" and it's easy to find, compare or roll back to later.
literatureandlatte.com - 4
Shortcut
Paste a quote in your own style with Cmd-Option-Shift-V
Command-Option-Shift-V on a Mac, or Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows, pastes text in your document's style rather than the web page's. Command-Option-B and Command-Option-I (Alt+Shift+B and Alt+Shift+I on Windows) hide the Binder and Inspector when you just want to write.
literatureandlatte.com - 5
Easy to miss
Turn on Revision Mode when you edit, and changes show in colour
Choose Format, Revision Mode and pick a level, and new text is coloured as you type. There are five levels, one for each editing pass. When you're done, Format, Revision Mode, Remove Revisions clears the colour, and Edit, Text Tidying, Delete Struck-Through Text clears the cuts.
literatureandlatte.com - 6
Setting
On iPhone and iPad, switch on Auto-Detect Changes
Scrivener for iOS doesn't sync while you write. It syncs with Dropbox when you finish with a project or tap the sync icon. Turn on Auto-Detect Changes in Settings, Scrivener, Syncing & Sharing and it syncs whenever you leave a project you've changed. Get back to the project list before you switch devices.
literatureandlatte.com - 7
Leaving
File, Export, Files copies your binder out as Word or plain text
Select a folder and File, Export, Files writes its documents out as RTF, Word, Final Draft, plain text or MultiMarkdown, in the same folder structure as the Binder. The Metadata tab brings notes, metadata and snapshots along. Worth doing now and then, as a copy that doesn't need Scrivener to open.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A writing app at its plainest is a page that saves what you type.
You could make the core of Scrivener for yourself: long-form writing and templates. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $23.99, paid once, it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.
What you could make
- Long-form writing and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows and iOS that stay in step with each other.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Scrivener’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
Part 06 · Refunds
After you pay
Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help
What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Scrivener’s own terms and help pages.
Refunds and cancelling
Good · checked Oct 18, 2026
Scrivener is bought once, so there is nothing to cancel and nothing to renew. Buy from Literature & Latte's own store and the FAQ says refunds are given within 30 days, and there is a free trial that counts 30 days of actual use before that. It falls short of an A because the policy is two lines on an FAQ page that never says how to ask, and App Store purchases are Apple's business, not theirs.
- Refund window
- 30 days
- How you cancel
- See below
- Getting your money back
The FAQ's returns policy says refunds will be provided within 30 days of purchase, and points buyers to the 30-day free trial of everything sold on the store. It adds that for a purchase from Apple's App Store all refunds are dealt with by Apple, since Literature & Latte has no access to App Store sales records. The page does not say how a refund is requested.
Stated on literatureandlatte.com- How to cancel Scrivener
There is no subscription to end. The store sells Scrivener as a one-off licence for each platform, a separate one for macOS, Windows and iOS, with a bundle for the first two. The FAQ says the trial version simply stops working after 30 days of use if you do not buy a licence. None of the pages read describes a recurring plan or an account to close.
Stated on literatureandlatte.com- What you keep afterwards
A knowledge base article says Scrivener is a standard file-based program rather than a web or mobile app: projects are saved on your own hard drive, outside the program, so upgrading, uninstalling or moving from the trial to the purchased version does not affect the work you have done. It compares this to keeping .docx files on a computer without Word installed.
Stated on scrivener.tenderapp.com- Renewals
Nothing renews. The licence page describes a one-off household licence covering several computers of the same platform rather than a subscription, and says web store transactions are processed by Paddle, whose terms of sale it links to. No page read mentions automatic renewal or a recurring charge.
Stated on literatureandlatte.com
In your favour
- Thirty days to ask for your money back on anything bought from their own store.
- The free trial counts 30 days of use, not calendar days, so a weekend writer gets months out of it.
- It's bought once. Nothing renews, and there is no account to close.
- Your work sits in your own files on your own disk, and uninstalling doesn't touch it.
Watch out for
- Bought it in the App Store? Apple handles the refund, and Literature & Latte can't see the sale.
- The returns policy is two lines on an FAQ page, and it never says how to ask for a refund.
- The terms of sale for the web store are Paddle's, the payment processor's, not Literature & Latte's.
- There is no trial of Scrivener for iOS, because Apple's store doesn't allow one, so there you pay first.
Customer support
Good · checked Oct 18, 2026
No telephone line, and Literature & Latte says so plainly: a small team would have to put the price up to run one. What you get instead is email support, free for the life of the product, with a target of two business days in writing, plus a knowledge base, downloadable manuals, video tutorials and busy user forums. Everyone who pays can write in, and the reply time is stated. A B.
Ways to get help

The knowledge base says Literature & Latte provides complimentary technical support for the life of the product by email, that you always reach someone who knows the software, and that thorny questions can be escalated to the developers.

- When people answer
Its pages do not say.
- How fast it says it replies
A knowledge base article says the team answers all emails as soon as it can, with a target of answering all questions within two business days, although it can occasionally take longer during particularly busy periods, and that it tries to get to urgent questions first.
Stated on scrivener.tenderapp.com- What depends on your plan
The telephone support article says technical support is complimentary for the life of the product, by email and the public forums, for its customers. None of the pages read describes a paid support tier, a priority queue or a service level.
Stated on scrivener.tenderapp.com
In your favour
- Support is free for the life of the product, not just for the first year.
- They put a target in writing: a reply within two business days.
- Manuals to download, video tutorials and an interactive tutorial, all free.
- The user forums are public and busy, so the answer may already be sitting there.
Watch out for
- No telephone support at all, and the company says running a line would mean raising the price.
- No live chat either. Email, a form or the forums is the whole list.
- Two business days is a target, not a promise, and the page says busy spells can take longer.
- No hours are stated, so there's no telling when the team is at its desks.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Scrivener's FAQ page with its returns policy, the store page, the end user licence agreement page, the Learn & Support page, and knowledge base articles on telephone support, reply times and whether work survives an uninstall. The individual licence agreements are PDFs and were not read. Nobody here asked for a refund or wrote to its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
