Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 6 of the 11 other email sending services we grade
Twilio SendGrid is an email API and SMTP service for sending receipts, alerts, sign-up and password emails from an app, now sold on Twilio's website. Plans are priced by emails a month and features: Essentials covers core sending and tracking, and Pro adds a dedicated IP, subusers, single sign-on and email testing. A 60-day free trial allows 100 emails a day.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Twilio SendGrid, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for app email for teams already on Twilio
Twilio SendGrid does the whole job: API and SMTP sending, webhooks, an inbound parse that turns incoming email into data, templates and address validation.
- 2
Paid plans start at $19.95 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $19.95 per month for 50,000 emails.

Deliverability tools
SPF and DKIM domain authentication, link branding, reverse DNS and suppression management on every plan; Pro adds dedicated IPs, IP pools and automated IP warm-up.
- 7
Webhooks and analytics

The report card
Best for app email for teams already on Twilio
Twilio SendGrid does the whole job: API and SMTP sending, webhooks, an inbound parse that turns incoming email into data, templates and address validation. Essentials is $19.95 a month for 50,000 emails, among the cheaper ways to send that many. The catch is that Essentials is thin, with 1 teammate and 3 days of activity, and there's no lasting free plan, only a 60-day trial.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Graded on 50,000 emails a month: Essentials is $19.95 for exactly that, in the cheaper quarter of this category at that volume. It's thin for the money, with 1 teammate and 3 days of activity, and Pro at $89.95 is where dedicated IPs and SSO start. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No lasting free plan, but a 60-day trial with no card: 100 emails a day, enough to wire it into your app and test. After that you're paying. |
| Features | B | API and SMTP, event webhooks, an inbound parse webhook, dynamic templates, domain authentication, address validation and EU data residency. That covers the whole job. Testing credits, subusers and dedicated IPs wait for Pro. |
| Ease of use | C | Judged on how fast a developer sends a first email: client libraries, interactive API docs and a setup guide on every plan, but you'll authenticate a domain before mail goes out properly. No rating on record. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, with a REST API, client libraries, SMTP and webhooks, so anything that speaks SMTP can use it. The listing names no ready-made integrations, and there's no desktop or phone app, so B is the top. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Twilio SendGrid is for
- Great if you already use Twilio for texts or calls and want email from the same company
- Handy when you want to check addresses before you send, with 2,500 validations on Pro
- Good for growing apps that will need dedicated IPs and subusers later
Who it is not for
- Tight if you stay on Essentials, with 1 teammate and 3 days of email activity
- Skip it if you want a free plan that lasts, since the trial ends after 60 days
- Pricey if you need SSO or a dedicated IP, which start with Pro at $89.95 a month
Good to know
Good for
- Developers adding transactional email to an app
- Teams that also use Twilio for text messages or voice
- Growing senders who will need dedicated IPs and subusers
Worth knowing
- There is no lasting free plan: the free trial ends after 60 days and allows 100 emails a day.
- Essentials has a single teammate and keeps 3 days of email activity; dedicated IPs, subusers and SSO need Pro at $89.95 a month.
- Sending past the plan's volume can add overage charges, which the pricing page does not list.
- Email campaigns are a separate product, Marketing Campaigns, from $15 a month for 5,000 contacts and 15,000 emails.

Keep it
To replace Twilio SendGrid you would be making mail servers with a good name among inbox providers. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $239.40 a year.
What you could not
- Mail servers with a good name among inbox providers.
- Checking that an address exists without writing to it.
- An API that other software can build on.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: single sign-on and SOC 2.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
