Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 72 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade
Simple Sticky Notes is a freeware Windows program that puts sticky notes on the desktop. Notes are created from a system tray icon and can carry formatted text, checklists and alarm reminders, and a Note Explorer window lists, searches and groups every note. The maker, Simnet, states that it is free for both personal and commercial use.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Simple Sticky Notes, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Each one can be hidden, recoloured or given its own opacity.

Best for free sticky notes on a Windows desktop
Simple Sticky Notes puts sticky notes on your Windows desktop, free for personal and work use, with checklists, alarm reminders and one window that searches them all. It's Windows only, notes live in one local file so moving PCs is a backup-and-restore job, a restore wipes every note already in the app, and the license lets the maker advertise its other products inside it.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free outright, where paid plans in this category sit at $6 a month in the middle: the download page says it's completely free for personal and commercial use. Themes and alarm sounds come from the site's Store as add-on files, and no prices are shown there. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The whole Windows app is free with no cap and nothing to upgrade to. One string attached: the licence lets the maker place announcements of its other products in the software. |
| Features | C | It does the sticky-note job fully: formatted notes, checklists with child items, alarm reminders, and a Note Explorer that searches everything and sorts it into notebooks. But that's a small job, and notes sit in one local file, where restoring a backup permanently deletes every note in the app at the time. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, so we go by the listing: double-click the tray icon and a note lands on the desktop, with no account and nothing to set up. Each one can be hidden, recoloured or given its own opacity. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | One operating system, Windows 7 through 11, including Arm64. No Mac, phone or web version, and no integrations. Getting a note out means printing it, exporting text or RTF, or sharing to Twitter or WhatsApp. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Simple Sticky Notes is for
- Fits if you want reminders stuck to your Windows desktop where you'll see them
- Works for offices that need a notes tool that's free for commercial use
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you use a Mac or want notes on your phone, as it's Windows only with no web version
- Not for you if you work across two PCs, because moving notes means a backup and a restore
- Watch out: restoring a backup permanently deletes every note in the app at the time, trashed ones included
- Tight if you dislike promos, since the license lets the maker announce its other products inside the app
- Watch out: themes and alarm sounds come from the site's Store as add-ons with no prices shown
Good to know
Good for
- Windows users who want reminders stuck to the desktop
- Short checklists and quick notes that stay in view while working
- Offices that need a notes tool that is free for commercial use
Worth knowing
- Windows only: it runs on Windows 7 through 11, including Arm64 versions of Windows 10 and 11.
- Notes are kept in a local Notes.db file, and moving them to another PC is done with the backup and restore functions.
- Restoring a backup permanently deletes every note currently in the app, including trashed ones.
- The freeware license allows the maker to place announcements of its other products in the software.
