Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 28 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade
Simple Time Tracker is a free, open-source Android app for recording how much time goes to each activity in a day. An activity starts with one tap, and the app keeps the records and shows statistics over time. It needs no account or internet connection and the data stays on the phone. Widgets, notifications, backups and a Wear OS companion app are included, and there are no ads or in-app purchases.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Simple Time Tracker, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, but there's nothing at all to set up: one tap starts an activity, and it wants no account and no connection.

The report card
Best for free personal time tracking on Android
Simple Time Tracker is a free, open-source Android app for logging your day: tap an activity to start it and charts add it up, with no ads, no account and data kept on the phone. It's Android only, the Wear OS app comes only with the Google Play build, it's built for one person with no clients or invoices, and moving to a new phone relies on backup and restore.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | It's free: no paid plan, no ads, no in-app purchases, and the code is open source under the GPL-3.0 license. Most of this category charges $4.50 a month and up. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The full app comes from Google Play or F-Droid and you don't need an account or an internet connection. Nothing is held back, because there's no paid version to hold it for. |
| Features | C | One-tap timers, categories and tags, pie and bar charts, home-screen widgets, goals, reminders for untracked time, a Pomodoro mode and CSV export. It does that job fully, but it's a smaller job than this category's: no clients, no teams, no invoicing. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's nothing at all to set up: one tap starts an activity, and it wants no account and no connection. The widgets mean you needn't even open it. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Android and nothing else, with a Wear OS watch app if you install from Google Play rather than F-Droid. No iPhone, desktop or web version, no integrations, and with no account your records move to a new phone only by backup and restore. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Simple Time Tracker is for
- Fits if you're on Android and want a free tracker with no ads and no account
- Works for logging a whole day across personal things, like sleep, study and the gym
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you use an iPhone or want it on a computer, because it's Android only
- Too light for client work, with no team features and no invoicing
- Not for you if you swap phones a lot, since your data only moves by backup and restore
- Watch out: the F-Droid build has no Wear OS support, so the watch app needs the Google Play version
- Tight if you want integrations or a web view, as there are none, and it's the work of a single developer
Good to know
Good for
- Android users who want a free tracker with no ads and no account
- Logging how a whole day is spent across personal activities
- People who want their time data to stay on their own phone
Worth knowing
- It is an Android app with a Wear OS companion; the project lists no iPhone, desktop or web version.
- Data stays on the phone with no account, so carrying it to another device relies on backup and restore.
- The F-Droid build has no Wear OS support; the watch app needs the Google Play version.
- It is a personal tracker by a single developer, and the listing describes no team, client or invoicing features.

- Goals have their own screen, and reminders run on custom schedules, including ones for inactivity and untracked time. The app also has a Pomodoro mode.
- Wear OS app
- The Google Play version supports Wear OS watches and provides a watch face complication. The F-Droid build leaves out Google Play services and Wear OS support.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Simple Time Tracker is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 28 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade.
What you could make
- Time tracking, goals and Pomodoro timer: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Hooks into the device itself: a Wear OS app and widgets.
What this rests on. Simple Time Tracker’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
