Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 34 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade
Slab is a knowledge base and wiki for company documentation. Content is written as posts and organized into Topics, and a unified search returns results from Slab and from integrated tools in one place. Posts can carry a verification status with an expiry date, and the free plan covers teams of up to 10 users.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Slab, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No app rating on record, but there's nothing to wire up: sign up in a browser and start writing.
- 1

Slab is a team wiki where you write posts, group them into Topics, and search across Slab and the tools you've connected.
- 2
Paid plans start at $6.67 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $6.67 per user / month, billed annually ($8 billed monthly).
- 3

- 5
Posts and Topics
Content is written as posts and grouped into Topics, which organize related posts and give readers context. Posts and topics are unlimited on every plan.
- 6
Real-time editor and templates
The editor applies consistent formatting by default and lets several people work on a post at once. Templates are included on every plan.
- 7
Unified Search
One search box returns results from Slab content and from the tools connected to it, so answers stored elsewhere surface in the same list.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 34 of 51
That is against the other docs and wiki tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Slab you would be making a search engine with an AI model behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for a team wiki that's free up to 10 people
Slab is a team wiki where you write posts, group them into Topics, and search across Slab and the tools you've connected. It's free for up to 10 people, but free has no private topics, no AI and 10 MB attachments. There are no read-only seats, so everyone who logs in is paid for, SSO and the API start at $12.50 a user, and it lists no phone apps.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Startup is $6.67 a person a month billed annually, or $8 monthly, which lands just above the cheapest quarter for this category. Business, with the API and SAML SSO, is $12.50. One catch: there are no read-only accounts, so everyone who can log in is a paid seat. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free for up to 10 people, with unlimited posts and topics, templates, verification and the search across connected tools. A small team could really live on that. The caps arrive as you grow: no private topics, no AI, 10 MB attachments and 10 integrations. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole team-wiki job: posts grouped into Topics, a real-time editor that handles the formatting, templates, and one search box that covers connected tools as well as Slab. A post can carry a verified banner with an expiry date, so someone gets nudged to recheck it. |
| Ease of use | B | No app rating on record, but there's nothing to wire up: sign up in a browser and start writing. The editor applies consistent formatting by default and templates come with every plan, including the free one. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, Mac and Windows apps and a Chrome extension, hooked into Slack, GitHub, Google Workspace, Jira and Figma, with a GraphQL API from Business. The downloads page lists no phone apps at all. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Slab is for
- Fits if your team is 10 or fewer and you want a wiki without paying
- Works for non-profits and schools, who can ask for the Startup plan free
Who it is not for
- Skip it if people need to read the wiki on their phones, as no mobile apps are listed
- Pricey if most of your company only reads, because there are no read-only seats
- Not for you if you need SAML SSO, SCIM or the API below Business at $12.50 a user; audit logs are Enterprise only
- Tight if you stay free, with no private topics, no AI, 10 MB attachments and 10 integrations
- Watch out: guests are capped at 3 per user on Startup and 5 on Business
Good to know

- The downloads page offers desktop apps for Mac and Windows and a Chrome extension, but lists no mobile apps.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Slab you would be making a search engine with an AI model behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 34 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade. It costs $80.04 a year.
What you could make
- Wiki, documents and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A search engine with an AI model behind it.
- A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Slack, Google Workspace and GitHub among them, and has an API.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Slab’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
