2.6

SnipNotes is a notes app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch that its developer describes as a mix of a clipboard manager and a notebook. Notes can be typed, dictated, saved from the clipboard or shared in from other apps, then filed in an inbox, an archive and categories, and detected content such as addresses and phone numbers gets quick actions. The download is free; iCloud sync and other advanced features need SnipNotes Plus, sold as a one-time purchase or a subscription.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about SnipNotes, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card
Best for quick notes from your clipboard or Apple Watch
SnipNotes is a quick-capture notebook for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch: copied text, dictation or a watch note lands in an inbox to sort later. Core notes are free, but sync, tags, attachments, drawing and voice recordings are paid, sync is iCloud only, the Mac app lacks drawing, dictation, Siri and reminders, and the store shows a $1.99 subscription with no period beside old one-time prices.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Plus is $14.99 a year, which is $1.25 a month against a $6 middle here, or pay once: $19.99 for iPhone and iPad, $29.99 with the Mac added. Either way it's well under a year of a typical rival, and single features can be bought alone at $4.99. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Core note-taking is free on every device with no ads and no clock on it. The wall is sync: iCloud sync is paid and it's the only sync there is, so free notes stay on the device they were made on. Subcategories, tags, attachments, drawing and voice recordings are paid too. |
| Features | C | Capture covers copied text, dictation, the share sheet, a location, and a watch app that works away from the phone. Detected addresses and numbers get quick actions. But its own feature table says the Mac version still has no drawing, dictation, Siri, widgets, reminders or passcode lock. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, so we go by the listing: install it and new notes land in an inbox for you to file later, which keeps capture quick. Choosing between the subscription, two one-time unlocks and the single-feature upgrades takes a minute. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | One family of devices: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, with Siri, Shortcuts and Spotlight hooked in. The developer says there are no current plans for Windows or Android, and the FAQ rules out Dropbox, OneDrive and Nextcloud, so sync is iCloud only. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who SnipNotes is for
- Fits if you want to dictate a note to your Apple Watch and deal with it later
- Works for people who'd rather pay once, as Plus is $19.99 for iPhone and iPad
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you use Windows or Android, as the developer has no current plans for either
- Not for you if you want sync through Dropbox, OneDrive or Nextcloud, because it's iCloud only
- Tight if you're staying free, since sync, tags, attachments, drawing and voice recordings are all paid
- Watch out: the Mac app still has no drawing, dictation, Siri, widgets, reminders or passcode lock
- Watch out: the store lists a $1.99 subscription with no period, and old entries at $14.99 and $24.99 beside the promoted prices
Good to know
Good for
- Apple Watch owners who want to dictate and read notes on the wrist
- Collecting copied text, links and addresses to act on later
- People who prefer a one-time purchase to a notes subscription
Worth knowing
- It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch only; the developer says there are no current plans for Windows or Android.
- iCloud sync, subcategories, tags, file attachments, drawing and voice recordings are all paid.
- Sync works through iCloud only; the FAQ rules out Dropbox, OneDrive and Nextcloud because notes are stored as database records.
- The feature table marks drawing, dictation, Siri, widgets, reminders and passcode protection as not yet supported on the Mac.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace SnipNotes you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $19.99, paid once.
What you could make
- Notes and Markdown: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
- A clipboard history running in the background of your computer.
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, iCloud, Siri and Apple Shortcuts among them.
- Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app, Siri, Shortcuts and Apple Pencil.
What this rests on. SnipNotes’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
