Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 19 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade
solidtime is an open-source time tracker with a live timer, a drag-and-drop calendar and a weekly timesheet. Time is organized by client, project, task and tag, then reported, exported or billed through built-in invoicing. It runs as an EU-hosted cloud service with a free plan for one user, or self-hosted under the AGPL-3.0 license, and has desktop apps that record app activity locally.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about solidtime, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Hosting it yourself is a different job again.
- 1
Best for open-source time tracking, free for one
There's no phone app and no ready-made integrations, so skip it if you track on the go.
- 2
Paid plans start at about $8.96 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: €8 per user / month, billed annually; on-premise licenses from €49 / year.
- 3
There is a free plan
Solo cloud plan: 1 user with clients, projects, tags and tasks, calendar and timesheet views, breaks, desktop activity tracking and reporting. The self-hosted open-source edition is also free.
- 4
It runs on 4 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows and Linux, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Timer, calendar and timesheet
Track with a live timer, drag entries on a calendar, or fill a weekly grid with one row per project and task. Breaks are tracked apart from work time.
- 6
Desktop activity tracking
The macOS, Windows and Linux apps record which app and document is in focus and detect idle time. That activity stays on the device until it becomes a time entry.
- 7
Reporting and exports
Reports filter by member, project, client, task, tag or billable state and export as CSV, Excel or ODS. PDF reports and read-only report links need Professional.
- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 19 of 42
That is against the other time tracking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9

The report card
Best for open-source time tracking, free for one
solidtime is an open-source time tracker with a live timer, a drag-and-drop calendar and a weekly timesheet, free for one person on its EU-hosted cloud or on your own server. Billable rates and invoicing cost money either way: €8 a user a month on the cloud, or a license from €49 a year if you self-host. There's no phone app and no ready-made integrations, so skip it if you track on the go.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Cloud Professional is €8 a user a month billed annually, €9 monthly and excluding VAT, which is the dear end of the middle for a time tracker. Self-hosters pay less, from €49 a year for 1 user, but only if you're happy running the server. |
| Free plan and trial | B | The Solo cloud plan is free for 1 user, with clients, projects, tags, tasks, calendar and timesheet views, desktop activity tracking and reporting, and the self-hosted edition is free as well. A freelancer could live there, as long as nobody needs billing: rates and invoicing are paid either way. |
| Features | B | A live timer, a calendar you drag entries around on and a weekly grid, with desktop apps that note the app and document in focus. Projects carry a rate and a budget, invoices handle tax, discounts and EU reverse charge, and it imports from Toggl, Clockify and Harvest. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record. The cloud version is a web app you sign in to, but it's one you have to furnish: clients, projects, tasks and rates before a report says anything. Hosting it yourself is a different job again. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, Mac, Windows, Linux and a browser extension, plus an API. But the site lists no iOS or Android app at all, and no ready-made integrations are on record. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who solidtime is for
- Fits if you freelance alone and want a free cloud tracker for one user, without invoicing
- Works for teams that want open-source software hosted in the EU, or a copy on their own server
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you track time on your phone, because there's no iOS or Android app
- Tight if you stay on free Solo and bill clients, as rates, invoicing, estimates and PDF or shared reports need Professional
- Watch out: self-hosting is free but leaves out invoicing, which needs a Business license from €49 a year for 1 user or €199 for 5
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at €9 a user against €8 billed annually, and every price is in euros before VAT
- Not for you if you want ready-made links to other apps, as none are on record beyond the API and imports
Good to know
Good for
- Freelancers who want a free tracker for one user
- Teams that prefer open-source software hosted in the EU
- Companies that want to self-host under an annual license
Worth knowing
- Prices are in euros and exclude VAT.
- The free Solo plan is limited to 1 user and has no billable rates, invoicing, estimates, PDF reports or shareable reports.
- The free self-hosted edition leaves out invoicing; that needs a Business license from €49 a year.
- The site lists a web app, desktop apps and a browser extension, but no iOS or Android app.

Keep it, or make your own?
