Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 50 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade
Supernotes is a note-taking app built around short notecards instead of long documents. Cards hold Markdown text, equations, tables, images and checklists, and they can be nested, linked to each other and shared for real-time editing. Apps for the web, desktop and mobile sync automatically, and the free plan covers the essential features but caps the number of cards.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Supernotes, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No rating on record, so we go by the listing: sign up, open any app and start writing a card, with nothing to set up.
- 1
Best for short, linked notecards you can share
If you write long documents, look elsewhere.
- 2
Paid plans start at about $7.93 a month
As its pricing page puts it: £6 per month, billed annually (£72).
- 3
There is a free plan
Starter: begins with 100 cards, with more earned through achievements and referrals. Includes all apps, sync, offline editing and real-time sharing.
- 4
It runs on 6 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.
- 5
Notecards
Notes are short cards with a soft limit of 1,200 characters that can hold text, math equations, tables, images, code and checklists.
- 6
Hierarchy, links and graph
Cards can be arranged in a hierarchy and linked to one another, then explored in a 2D or 3D graph view or found with filters, search and sorting.
- 7
Real-time sharing
Share a card with other people, who can read it without a Supernotes account, or edit and comment in real time if they have one.

The report card
Best for short, linked notecards you can share
Supernotes is a notecard app where short cards nest, link and share, with apps on web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android and sync on the free plan. Free starts at 100 cards and stops new ones once they run out unless you earn or pay, each card has a soft limit of 1,200 characters, notes aren't end-to-end encrypted, and the site charges in pounds. If you write long documents, look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Unlimited is £6 a month billed annually, and on the US App Store $99.00 a year or $11.00 a month. The yearly works out at $8.25 a month, right at the top of this category's range, and the monthly price is in its dearest tenth. Student plans take 50% to 63% off. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Starter is free and comes with every app, sync, offline editing and real-time sharing. The cap is the card count: you start with 100 cards, earn more through achievements and referrals, and once you're out you can't create new ones. |
| Features | C | Cards hold Markdown, equations, tables, images, code and checklists, nest and link to each other, and open in a 2D or 3D graph, with real-time sharing readable without an account. But the listing names two gaps: a soft limit of 1,200 characters a card, so long notes get split up, and no end-to-end encryption. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, so we go by the listing: sign up, open any app and start writing a card, with nothing to set up. The 1,200-character limit keeps each note short, which is either the point or an annoyance. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, with sync included even on the free plan, a public API, official integrations with Telegram, Raycast and Pipedream, and capture by emailing a secret address. No platform gap on the listing. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Supernotes is for
- Fits if you write short, single-idea notes rather than long documents
- Works for a small group that shares and edits notes together in real time
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're never paying, because Starter begins at 100 cards and stops new ones at the limit
- Not for you if you write long documents, since each card has a soft limit of 1,200 characters
- Skip it if you need end-to-end encryption, as notes are only encrypted in transit and at rest
- Pricey if you pay monthly on the App Store, where Unlimited is $11.00 a month against £6 a month billed yearly on the site
- Watch out: the website charges in British pounds, so a US buyer pays the exchange rate or $99.00 a year on the App Store
Good to know
Good for
- People who prefer short, atomic notes to long documents
- Students building linked revision notes, with a student discount
- Small groups sharing and editing notes together
Worth knowing
- The free Starter plan begins with 100 cards; once the limit is reached, no new cards can be created without earning more or upgrading.
- Website prices are charged in British pounds. The US App Store lists Unlimited at $11.00 a month or $99.00 a year.
- Notes are encrypted in transit and at rest but are not end-to-end encrypted.
- Each card has a soft limit of 1,200 characters, so long documents are split across cards.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Supernotes you could make: notes, Markdown and linked notes. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $95.19 a year.
What you could make
- Notes, Markdown and linked notes: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Telegram, Raycast and Pipedream among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Supernotes’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
