What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

Teachable is a platform for selling online courses, coaching, digital downloads and memberships from a school with your own brand and domain. Its built-in checkout, Teachable Payments, collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST, and students can learn on the web or in iOS and Android apps. Teachable is part of Hotmart Company.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Teachable, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card

Best for selling courses to students around the world

Teachable is a straightforward course store with a checkout that collects and pays sales tax, VAT and GST for you in 45+ countries, and student apps on every plan. The catch is Starter's 7.5% cut: once you're selling, Builder at $69 a month billed yearly is the real price. The community side is thin next to its rivals.

ToolGPA report cardTeachableGraded Oct 17, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCStarter is $29 a month billed yearly, but its 7.5% fee adds $150 on $2,000 of sales, making $179. Builder at $69 takes no fee with Teachable Payments, so $69 a month is what you'd pay: above this category's dearer quarter ($59), well short of its dearest tenth.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. There's a 7-day free trial, and the listing doesn't say it needs a card, then a 30-day money-back guarantee once you've paid.
FeaturesCCourses with drip, quizzes and graded short answers, coaching, downloads, memberships, upsells, cart recovery and email. The course job is covered; the gap is community, which is a student community on Builder rather than the spaces and events rivals offer.
Ease of useB4.62 from about 9,400 App Store ratings, a little under the 4.7 an A needs. The AI course starter drafts a curriculum, so you're not starting from a blank page.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android for students, with Zapier and webhooks on every plan and a public API on Growth. No desktop app, which an A needs.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Teachable is for

  • Great if your students are in many countries and you don't want to deal with VAT yourself
  • Handy when you sell coaching or downloads next to a course
  • Good for schools whose students learn on their phones, with apps on every plan

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if a lively community is the point, since it's a student community at most
  • Tight if you want certificates or a second admin, which need Growth at $139 a month
  • Pricey if you stay on Starter once sales pick up, as 7.5% of every sale adds up fast

Good to know

Good for

  • Creators selling courses to students in many countries who want tax handled
  • Teachers adding coaching or downloads beside a course
  • Schools whose students learn on their phones

Worth knowing

  • Starter takes 7.5% of each sale on top of processing fees: 2.9% + 30 cents for US cards, 3.9% + 30 cents for international cards.
  • There is no free plan, only a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Certificates, removing Teachable branding and more than 1 admin user all need Growth at $139 a month billed annually.
  • Products are capped at 5, 10 and 50 by plan; memberships, bundles and drafts do not count.

8/18

Other course and community platforms it is graded above

Teachable's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 8 of the 18 other course and community platforms we grade, and level with 6.

It stands best on ease of use (B, above 16 of 18) and worst on features (C, above 0).

Its paid plans start at $29 a month, against a middle price of $41 for the category: 4 of the 17 others that charge start lower.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Teachable you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It costs $348 a year.

What you could make

  • Online courses: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Stripe, PayPal and Zapier among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • People on the other end: coaches. No app builder makes those.

What this rests on. Teachable’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
