Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 57 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade

TeraCopy is a Windows utility from Code Sector that takes over the copy and move functions in Explorer. It skips a problem file instead of stopping the whole transfer, waits for a drive or network to reconnect, queues transfers and can verify each copy against a checksum. The free version does not expire but is not licensed for commercial use; Pro and Business licenses are a one-time purchase. A simpler Mac version is also available.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about TeraCopy, taken from its own pages and our grades.

An optional confirmation on drag and drop stops folders being moved by accident.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for big file copies on Windows that don't quit halfway

TeraCopy replaces copy and move in Windows Explorer: it skips a failed file, carries on with the rest and checks each copy against a checksum.

  2. 2

    What it costs

Paid plans start at $34.95 one-time purchase (Pro license, personal use).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The free version does not expire and includes verification, checksum files, locked-file copying, Explorer integration and secure delete, with up to 2 copy threads. It is not licensed for commercial use.

  4. 4

    It runs on 2 platforms

    Windows and macOS.

  5. 5

    Error recovery

When a file fails to copy, TeraCopy skips it without ending the whole transfer and waits for a network or device to reconnect. Failed or skipped files can be retried afterwards.

  6. 6

    File verification

Checks that destination files match the source using 17 checksum algorithms, including CRC32, MD5, SHA1, BLAKE3 and xxHash3, and can generate or validate checksum files.

  7. 7

    Explorer integration

Replaces the copy and move functions in Windows Explorer, with an optional confirmation dialog on drag and drop to prevent folders being moved by accident.

  8. 8

    A 2.8 GPA, above 57 of 94

That is against the other desktop utilities we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Your call

It depends on the utility: a converter or a calculator is an afternoon.

The report card

Best for big file copies on Windows that don't quit halfway

TeraCopy replaces copy and move in Windows Explorer: it skips a failed file, carries on with the rest and checks each copy against a checksum. The free version doesn't expire, but it's for personal use only, limited to 2 copy threads, and several destinations need a license from $34.95. The Mac app is a separate, simpler version 1.1 with no purchase link, and the About page still talks of a lifetime license although only minor updates are free.

ToolGPA report cardTeraCopyGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAThe Pro licence is $34.95 once for all your own devices, with free minor updates and no subscription, which is under a year of the $2.99 a month utilities here charge in the middle. Business is $49.95, and a site licence for up to 100 users is $999.
Free plan and trialBThe free version doesn't expire and includes verification, checksum files, locked-file copying and Explorer integration. The caps are 2 copy threads, no multiple destinations and no commercial use.
FeaturesCCopying and moving files is its one job: it skips a failed file instead of ending the transfer, waits for a drive or network to come back, queues jobs and verifies with 17 checksum algorithms. Several destinations at once and CSV reports are behind the license.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: it takes over the copy and move you already use in Explorer, so there's no new habit to learn. An optional confirmation on drag and drop stops folders being moved by accident.
Platforms and integrationsCWindows and Mac, but not as equals: TeraCopy 4 needs Windows 10 or 11, while the Mac app is a separate, simpler version 1.1 with four hash algorithms. It hooks into Windows Explorer and PowerShell. No phone apps, no web.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who TeraCopy is for

  • Fits if you run large or unattended transfers that mustn't stop at the first error
  • Works for backups where every copy has to be verified by checksum

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want the full thing on a Mac, as the Mac app is a simpler version 1.1 with no purchase link
  • Tight if you're using the free version at work, because it isn't licensed for commercial use
  • Not for you if you copy to several drives at once without paying, since multiple destinations need a license
  • Watch out: the free version is capped at 2 copy threads, and reports, favorite folders and file list editing are paid
  • Watch out: only minor updates are free, major versions are discounted upgrades, and the About page still says lifetime license

Good to know

Good for

  • Large or unattended transfers that should not stop at the first error
  • Backups and media work where every copy must be verified by checksum
  • Windows users who find the built-in copy dialog too limited

Worth knowing

  • The free version is not licensed for commercial use and is limited to 2 copy threads.
  • Copying to multiple destinations, file list editing, favorite folders and HTML or CSV reports require a paid license.
  • TeraCopy 4 needs Windows 10 or 11. The Mac app is a separate, simpler version 1.1 with four hash algorithms, and its page offers a download but no purchase link.
  • A license includes free minor updates, with discounted upgrades for major versions; the About page still describes a lifetime license.

Other desktop utilities it is graded above

TeraCopy's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 57 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade, and level with 26.

It stands best on value for money (A, above 24 of 94) and worst on features (C, above 1).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

It depends on the utility: a converter or a calculator is an afternoon.

TeraCopy sits between: not beyond making, and not a weekend's work either. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $34.95, paid once, it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could not

  • A file manager working directly on your disk.
  • A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.

What this rests on. TeraCopy’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
