GPA, above 36 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade
Thaw is a free, open-source menu bar manager for macOS. It moves menu bar items into a hidden or always-hidden section and reveals them on hover, click, scroll, swipe or hotkey, or shows them in a separate bar below the menu bar on MacBooks with a notch. It also offers item search, condition-based triggers, switchable profiles and styling of the menu bar itself.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Thaw, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card
Best for a free tidy-up for a crowded Mac menu bar
Thaw is a free, open-source Mac app that hides menu bar icons in a separate section and shows them on hover, click or hotkey, with a second bar under the notch on MacBooks. It needs macOS 26 or later, Accessibility permission to move items and Screen Recording for previews. Only battery and power triggers are on by default; the rest are switched on one by one in Developer settings, and some are marked experimental.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free and open source under GPL-3.0, and you just download it and run it. The README says there's no purchase, no subscription, no account and no upgrade fee when a new macOS lands. |
| Free plan and trial | A | All of it is free: hidden sections, the Thaw Bar, item search, triggers, profiles, hotkeys and menu bar styling. No account, no tracking, nothing held back. |
| Features | C | It does menu bar tidying fully, with hidden sections, a keyboard search panel, profiles bound to a display or Space and a restyled bar. That's a small job, though, and the listing says only battery and power triggers are on by default, the rest going on one at a time from Developer settings. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and there's setting up to do before it earns its keep: Accessibility permission to move items at all, Screen Recording for live previews, and a trip into Developer settings for most of the triggers. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Mac only, and the README says macOS 26 or later, so a single operating system and a recent one at that. It works with Raycast, Alfred, Shortcuts and Keyboard Maestro, but there's nothing for Windows or Linux. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Thaw is for
- Fits if your menu bar is crowded, especially on a MacBook with a notch
- Works for showing icons by context, such as the display, Space or Focus you're in
Who it is not for
- Skip it if your Mac runs anything older than macOS 26, which it needs
- Not for you if you'd rather not grant Accessibility permission, since it can't move menu bar items without it
- Tight if you want every trigger ready from day one, as most are off by default and some are marked experimental
- Watch out: live previews and wallpaper tinting need Screen Recording permission too
- Skip it if you're on Windows or Linux, as it's macOS only
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users with a crowded menu bar, including MacBooks with a notch
- People who want a free, open-source alternative to paid menu bar managers
- Showing or hiding items by context, such as the display, Space or Focus
Worth knowing
- macOS only, and the README says it needs macOS 26 or later.
- Only battery and power triggers are on by default. Other conditions are enabled one at a time from Developer settings, and some are marked experimental.
- It needs Accessibility permission to move menu bar items. Live item previews and wallpaper-based tinting also need Screen Recording permission.

Keep it
Thaw is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
What you could not
- A native app living in the menu bar.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Raycast, Droppy and Alfred among them.
What this rests on. Thaw’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
