Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 19 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade

Timely is a time tracking platform for consultancies, agencies and software teams that records work automatically instead of relying on timers. Its Memory app captures activity on a Mac or Windows computer to a private timeline, and AI drafts timesheets from that record for the user to approve. Managers get project dashboards, budgets, capacity planning, reports and invoicing on top of the tracked hours.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Timely, taken from its own pages and our grades.

A manual timer is there if you want one.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for timesheets drafted for you by AI

Timely records what you do on a Mac or Windows computer and has AI draft a timesheet for you to approve, with no timers to run.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $9 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $9 per user / month, billed yearly ($11 billed monthly).

  3. 3

    You can try it first

14-day free trial with access to all features

  4. 4

    It runs on 5 platforms

Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Memory tracker

The Memory app for Mac and Windows records your work automatically to a private timeline, so there are no timers to start and stop. A manual timer is also available.

  6. 6

    AI timesheets

AI drafts a timesheet from the recorded activity and sorts it into projects, leaving the user to review and approve the entries.

  7. 7

    Projects and budgets

A project dashboard shows team and budget activity as it happens, with billable rates and time or money budgets. Recurring budgets need Premium or Unlimited.

  8. 8

    A 2.6 GPA, above 19 of 42

That is against the other time tracking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

The plain part of Timely you could make: time tracking, reports and invoicing. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for timesheets drafted for you by AI

Timely records what you do on a Mac or Windows computer and has AI draft a timesheet for you to approve, with no timers to run. There's no free plan, and Starter at $9 a user stops at 5 users and 20 projects. Integrations, budgets and planning need Premium at $16, the phone apps are no longer actively developed, and there's no Linux app, so small teams watching costs should look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardTimelyGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDStarter is $9 a user a month billed yearly, $11 monthly, and it's capped at 5 users and 20 projects. Integrations, budgets and planning need Premium at $16, and Unlimited is $22, which is two to three times what a time tracker typically costs.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. There's a 14-day trial with access to all the features, though whether it asks for a card isn't on record. Once it ends you need a subscription to get back in.
FeaturesBThe Memory app records your work to a private timeline and AI sorts it into projects as a draft timesheet. Around that sit project dashboards, time or money budgets, planning, capacity reports and invoices that go to QuickBooks Online. The job is covered.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but the whole point is that there's nothing to run: no timers to start or stop, just a drafted timesheet to look over and approve. A manual timer is there if you want one.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, with an API and links to Asana, Jira, Trello, Linear, ClickUp and GitHub. Two catches: Timely's handbook says the phone apps are no longer actively developed, and no Linux app is listed.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Timely is for

  • Fits if you bill by the hour and would rather approve a drafted timesheet than run timers
  • Works for managers who follow project budgets and team capacity, from Premium up

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want a free plan, because a subscription is needed once the 14-day trial ends
  • Tight if you're on Starter and growing, since it stops at 5 users and 20 projects, and Premium at 50 users
  • Pricey if you need budgets or integrations, which start on Premium at $16 a user, or $20 billed monthly
  • Watch out: Timely's handbook says the iOS and Android apps are no longer actively developed
  • Not for you if you work on Linux or an older computer, as Memory needs macOS 14 or Windows 10 or later

Good to know

Good for

  • Consultancies and agencies that bill by the hour and dislike running timers
  • People who want timesheets drafted from a record of their activity
  • Managers following project budgets and team capacity

Worth knowing

  • There is no free plan: a subscription is needed once the 14-day trial ends.
  • Starter is capped at 5 users and 20 projects, and Premium at 50 users.
  • Timely's handbook says the iOS and Android apps remain available but are no longer actively developed.
  • Memory apps are offered for macOS 14 or later and Windows 10 or later; no Linux app is listed.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Timely you could make: time tracking, reports and invoicing. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $108 a year.

What you could make

  • Time tracking, reports and invoicing: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Asana, Jira and Trello among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Timely’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
