Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

1.8

GPA, above 1 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Tinderbox is a Mac application from Eastgate Systems for making, visualizing and analyzing notes. The same notes can be viewed as maps, outlines, timelines and charts, and agents scan a document continuously to gather the notes that match criteria you set. Documents are XML files kept on your own computer, and the app is sold as a one-time license that includes a year of free updates.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Tinderbox, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No rating on record, and this is a deep tool: agents, prototypes, attributes and export templates are all yours to learn.

Agents scan the document continuously and collect notes that meet your criteria, such as overdue tasks or a topic, and can feed project dashboards.

The report card

Best for making sense of a big pile of notes on a Mac

Tinderbox is a Mac app that shows the same notes as a map, outline, timeline or chart, with agents that keep scanning for what you've asked them to find. It costs $289, the most of any one-time price in this category, the license covers one year of updates with later ones at $98, it's Mac only on macOS 12 or later, and the free demo stops at about thirty notes. If you just want to write things down, look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardTinderboxGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyD$289 once. One-time prices in this category sit around $13 in the middle, and $289 is the dearest we have on record anywhere in it. Once isn't quite once, either: the licence covers a year of updates and later ones are $98. The $325 Household license covers five people, $65 each.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan, but the demo does everything the full version does and doesn't expire. It just stops at about thirty notes, which is enough to poke around and nowhere near enough to move in.
FeaturesBIt covers the writing-and-thinking job: maps, outlines, timelines and charts of the same notes, agents that keep scanning for what matches, prototypes so one change updates every note based on it, and export to HTML, XML, RSS and OPML. Documents are plain XML files on your own Mac.
Ease of useCNo rating on record, and this is a deep tool: agents, prototypes, attributes and export templates are all yours to learn. The demo has every feature, at least, so you find out how you get on before spending anything.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system. Mac only, on macOS 12 or later, with no iPhone or iPad app. For those it shares notes out to Apple Notes, Simplenote, Evernote or DEVONthink, and files sync through Dropbox or iCloud Drive.
Grade point averageWeak, out of 4.01.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Tinderbox is for

  • Fits if you're working through a large set of research notes on a Mac
  • Works for people who want several visual views of the same material, kept in files on their own computer

Who it is not for

  • Pricey if you just want somewhere to write things down, at $289
  • Skip it if you don't use a Mac, as there's no Windows, iPhone or iPad version
  • Not for you if you expect updates for life, because the license includes one year and upgrading is $98
  • Tight if you're trying it out, since the demo stops at about thirty notes, and agents and prototypes take time to learn
  • Watch out: the order page showed a $217 sale price, but the checkout listed no discount when checked

Good to know

Good for

  • Writers, researchers and analysts working through large sets of notes

  • The free demo does everything the full version does but can only make about thirty notes.

Part 04 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

1/147

Other note-taking apps it is graded above

Tinderbox's GPA of 1.8 is higher than 1 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade, and level with 2.

It stands best on features (B, above 100 of 147) and worst on value for money (D, above 0).

Every bar is all 148 note-taking apps we grade, cut by the letter each got. Tinderbox’s own letter is outlined.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Tinderbox you could make: notes and linked notes. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 144 of the 147 other note-taking apps grade higher. It costs $289, paid once.

What you could make

  • Notes and linked notes: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, DEVONthink, Apple Notes and Evernote among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Tinderbox’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
