Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 16 of the 36 other read-later and bookmark apps we grade

Tiny Tiny RSS (tt-rss) is a free, open-source, web-based feed reader and aggregator that you host yourself, normally with Docker. It organizes feeds into folders, filters and scores articles with regular expressions, and can be extended with plugins and themes. The original project was retired on 2025-11-01, and development now continues as a fork run by a long-time contributor, which also maintains the tt-rss.org documentation.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Tiny Tiny RSS, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It's self-hosted only, through Docker, so you run, back up and update the server.

  4. 4

    Folders, OPML and deduplication

Feeds are organized into folders and subfolders, imported and exported as OPML, and deduplicated, with a plugin that uses perceptual hashing for repeated images. Podcasts are supported.

  5. 5

    Content filters and scoring

Filters match articles against regular expressions and then apply actions. Score-changing filters move articles up or down the headline list and can mark very low scores as read.

  6. 6

    Generated feeds and publishing

Almost anything shown in the headline list, such as a feed, label or category, can be re-published as an Atom or JSON feed protected by a random key.

The report card

Best for heavy feed loads on your own server

Tiny Tiny RSS is a free feed reader you host yourself, with regex filters, article scoring, plugins and a daily email digest. It's self-hosted only, through Docker, so you run, back up and update the server. The original project was retired in November 2025 and what you install now is a fork. The Android client is no longer maintained, so reading happens in a browser. Anyone who doesn't run a server should look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardTiny Tiny RSSGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree software under the GNU GPLv3, with no paid plan and no hosted version from the project, against $3.33 a month in the middle of this category. The only bill is for whatever server you run it on.
Free plan and trialAThe complete reader is free with no cap and nothing kept back for payers, because there isn't a paid tier to keep it for. You do need somewhere to run it.
FeaturesBIt covers the whole feed-reading job: folders inside folders, OPML, deduplication, regex filters that act on articles, scoring that pushes them up or down the list, almost any view republished as an Atom or JSON feed, plugins for full-text extraction and sharing, and a daily email digest.
Ease of useDSelf-hosted only, so you run, back up and update the server yourself, which is the hardest start in this category. Installation expects Docker, and the site says support may be limited if you do it any other way.
Platforms and integrationsCThe web interface, and that's it. The Android client is no longer maintained and its APK downloads are gone, the listing names no integrations, and a documented JSON API for third-party clients is the only way out of the browser.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Tiny Tiny RSS is for

  • Fits if you already run services with Docker and want your reader alongside them
  • Works for people with a heavy feed load who'll write regex filters and scoring rules to sort it

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you don't run Docker, as the site says support may be limited any other way
  • Not for you if you don't want to run, back up and update a server, since there's no hosted version
  • Not for you if you want a phone app: the Android client is no longer maintained and its APKs are gone
  • Watch out: the original project was retired on 1 November 2025, and the current code is a fork by a long-time contributor
  • Too light for linking up other apps, as the listing names no integrations beyond a JSON API

Good to know

Good for

  • Self-hosters who already run services with Docker
  • Readers who want regex filters and scoring to sort a heavy feed load
  • People who want to republish selections of articles as feeds

Worth knowing

  • The original project was retired on 2025-11-01; the current code is a fork begun on 2025-10-03 by a long-time contributor.
  • Installation expects Docker, and the site says support may be limited if you run it any other way.
  • The Android client is no longer maintained and its APK downloads are gone, so reading happens in the web interface.
  • It is self-hosted only: you run, back up and update the server yourself.

Part 03 · Features

What it does

Its main features, where it runs, what it works with and who makes it

1

Place it runs: Web

Free, self-hosted web feed reader with filters and plugins. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: open source, self-hostable, public API, rSS reader.

Folders, OPML and deduplication
Feeds are organized into folders and subfolders, imported and exported as OPML, and deduplicated, with a plugin that uses perceptual hashing for repeated images. Podcasts are supported.
Content filters and scoring
Filters match articles against regular expressions and then apply actions. Score-changing filters move articles up or down the headline list and can mark very low scores as read.
Generated feeds and publishing
Almost anything shown in the headline list, such as a feed, label or category, can be re-published as an Atom or JSON feed protected by a random key.
Share anything
A bookmarklet shares arbitrary web pages into your Published feed, and combined with Readability this lets tt-rss work like a read-it-later site.
Plugins and themes
Plugins share articles to other sites, extract full article text with Readability, change hotkeys or handle unusual feeds, and themes restyle the interface.
Email digests and JSON API
Users can opt into a daily email digest of unread headlines, and a documented JSON API is available for third-party clients.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Tiny Tiny RSS is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

What you could make

  • RSS reader: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • An API that other software can build on.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Tiny Tiny RSS’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
