Total Commander is a file manager for Windows from Ghisler Software that shows two file windows side by side. Beyond copying, moving and deleting files, it packs and unpacks archives, connects to FTP servers, compares files by content, synchronizes directories and renames files in bulk. The Windows version is shareware with a 30-day test period and a one-time licence priced in euros; the Android app is freeware.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Total Commander, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card
Best for two-pane file wrangling on Windows
Total Commander is a two-pane file manager for Windows. Two folders sit side by side, with an FTP client, archive packing, file comparison, directory sync and bulk renaming in the same program. What holds it back: the Windows version is shareware, so after 30 days you pay €42 plus VAT or delete it, the key can take 1-2 business days to arrive, and there's no native Mac or Linux version.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | €42 once per user, plus VAT where charged. That's a one-off under two years of what a paid utility here costs monthly, and one licence covers you on any number of computers with updates free until further notice. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free version on Windows. You get a 30-day test period with the full shareware build and no card needed, then you order a licence or delete it. The Android app is freeware, but that isn't the main event. |
| Features | B | Two panels with tabs, packing and unpacking of ZIP, 7ZIP, RAR and TAR, an FTP client with FTPS, compare by content, directory sync, multi-rename and a Quick View panel. The file manager job is covered end to end, and so it is by Directory Opus and ForkLift. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record. Install it and two panels sit side by side, which is the whole idea and easy enough to follow. Buying is the slow part: the order page says to allow about 1-2 business days for the key. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Windows, plus a freeware app for Android phones and tablets. No native Mac or Linux version at all, the vendor pointing you at an emulator or Wine, and no integrations or API listed. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Total Commander is for
- Fits if you manage a lot of files on Windows and want two panels instead of Explorer
- Works for people who want FTP, archives and file comparison in one program, paid for once
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you're on a Mac or Linux, as there's no native version and the vendor points you to an emulator or Wine
- Not for you if you want a free file manager on Windows, since the shareware runs 30 days, then it's €42 or delete it
- Tight if you need the key today, because the order page says to allow about 1-2 business days
- Watch out: the price is in euros through an EU payment processor, and your bank may add a 1-2.5% fee
- Skip it if you want it wired into other apps, as no integrations or API are listed
Good to know
Good for
- Windows users who manage many files and prefer two panels to Explorer
- People who want FTP, archive handling and file comparison in one program
- Companies that want concurrent-use licences not tied to single computers
Worth knowing
- The Windows version is shareware: after 30 days you must order a licence (€42 plus VAT where charged) or delete the program.
- There is no native Mac or Linux version. The vendor suggests a Windows emulator on a Mac and says it runs on Linux with Wine.
- The price is set in euros and charged by an EU payment processor; the vendor warns of a possible 1-2.5% processing fee from your bank.
- The registration key is not instant: the order page says to allow about 1-2 business days for delivery.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Total Commander you could make: file compression. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $47.07, paid once.
What you could make
- File compression: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A file manager working directly on your disk.
- Apps for Windows and Android that stay in step with each other.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Total Commander’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
