Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 7 of the 14 other antivirus apps we grade
Trend Micro sells home security in four tiers: Antivirus+ Security for one computer, Internet Security for three PCs, Maximum Security for five devices across Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, and Premium Security Suite, which adds a VPN, identity protection and a personal IT helpdesk for ten devices. It also offers free tools such as the HouseCall scanner.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Trend Micro, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It installs and starts protecting, with nothing to set up first.
- 1

- 2
Paid plans start at $2.50 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $29.95 per year for 1 device (Antivirus+), first term; renewal price not stated.
- 3
There is a free plan
HouseCall gives a free on-demand security scan of a Windows PC; ongoing real-time protection needs a paid plan.

- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 7 of 14
That is against the other antivirus apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Trend Micro you would be making an engine that recognises new malware as it appears. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for covering PCs, Macs, phones and Chromebooks
Trend Micro's Maximum Security covers five devices across Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone and Chromebook, and Folder Shield guards even your Dropbox and OneDrive folders from ransomware. Paying for two years up front, $139.95, is the way to buy it, because the yearly price is a first-term deal and Trend Micro doesn't say what it renews at.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Maximum Security for 5 devices is $139.95 for a 2-year term, about $5.83 a month, above the dearer quarter of antivirus. The yearly route is $74.95 for the first term, but the renewal price isn't stated, so two years that way can't be worked out. |
| Free plan and trial | C | HouseCall scans a Windows PC for free, on demand. It's a check-up, not protection: anything ongoing needs a paid plan, and the listing shows no free trial. |
| Features | B | AI-based malware and web protection, Pay Guard for banking, Folder Shield for cloud-synced folders, and a password manager from Internet Security. The VPN, identity protection and a 24/7 helpdesk come only in Premium Security Suite. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record. It installs and starts protecting, with nothing to set up first. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone, and Chromebooks through a browser extension. No API or integration list on record, so it stops at B. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Trend Micro you would be making an engine that recognises new malware as it appears. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $29.95 a year.
What you could not
- An engine that recognises new malware as it appears.
- Servers in dozens of countries, kept fast and private.
- A password vault, the last thing anyone should make for themselves.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
