Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 36 of the 51 other email apps we grade

Tuta Mail is an encrypted email service from Tutao GmbH in Hanover, Germany, formerly known as Tutanota. Mail, the calendar and the address book are all end-to-end encrypted, and the web, desktop and mobile apps are open source. There is a free plan with 1 GB of storage, and paid plans, priced in euros, add storage, extra addresses, custom domains and offline support.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Tuta Mail, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Encryption is on from the first login and mail between Tuta users encrypts itself, so there's nothing to switch on.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for encrypted email and calendar from €3 a month

Tuta Mail encrypts email, calendar and contacts by default, with open-source apps on web, desktop and both phones, and paid plans from €3 a month paid yearly.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at about $3.36 a month

As its pricing page puts it: €3 per month, paid yearly (lowest paid personal plan).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

1 GB of storage, one calendar and 3 labels, with end-to-end encryption. Free accounts are deleted after more than six months without a login.

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    End-to-end encryption by default

All data in the mailbox is encrypted so that Tuta has no access to it, and mail between Tuta users is encrypted automatically. Tuta describes its encryption as quantum-safe.

  6. 6

    Password-protected emails

Encrypted mail can be exchanged with people who do not use Tuta by agreeing on a shared password with the recipient.

  7. 7

    Encrypted calendar and contacts

The calendar and address book are encrypted as well, down to contacts' email addresses and event notifications. Paid plans add calendar sharing and event invites.

  8. 8

    A 2.8 GPA, above 36 of 51

That is against the other email apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace Tuta Mail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for encrypted email and calendar from €3 a month

Tuta Mail encrypts email, calendar and contacts by default, with open-source apps on web, desktop and both phones, and paid plans from €3 a month paid yearly. The free plan is 1 GB, one calendar and 3 labels with no inbox rules, and it's deleted after six months without a login. Importing old mail needs the €8 Legend plan and a desktop app, and there are no integrations or API.

ToolGPA report cardTuta MailGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyB€3 a month paid yearly sits inside the cheapest quarter of paid email, which starts around $4 against a middle of $8. For that you get 20 GB, 15 extra addresses and 3 custom domains. Prices are in euros, and Tuta says the final amount moves with fees and exchange rates.
Free plan and trialCFree includes the same encryption, but the box is 1 GB, one calendar and 3 labels, with no inbox rules, no offline support and no schedule send. A year of attachments will fill that. And the account is deleted if you don't log in for six months.
FeaturesCThe mail basics are covered, and the encryption reaches the calendar and address book too, with password-protected mail to people outside Tuta. But the listing names its own gaps: importing old EML or MBOX mail is Legend and Unlimited only, and desktop only, and inbox rules and offline are paid extras.
Ease of useA4.72 from about 3,700 App Store ratings, which is the top end of this category. Encryption is on from the first login and mail between Tuta users encrypts itself, so there's nothing to switch on.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, with Tuta running its own push service rather than Google's. Every device, then, but the listing has no integrations and no API at all, so nothing else on your computer talks to it.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Tuta Mail is for

  • Fits if you want mail, calendar and contacts encrypted by default
  • Works for non-profits and schools, who can apply for 50% off

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free, with 1 GB, 3 labels and no inbox rules, offline support or schedule send
  • Skip it if you'd only check in now and then, as free accounts are deleted after six months without a login
  • Pricey if you want old mail moved in, since EML and MBOX import needs Legend at €8 and a desktop app
  • Watch out: prices are in euros, and Tuta says the final amount moves with fees and exchange rates
  • Skip it if you want other apps to talk to your mail, as no integrations or API are listed

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want mail, calendar and contacts encrypted by default
  • Using a custom domain with an encrypted mailbox

  • Free accounts are deleted if you do not log in for more than six months.
  • Prices are set in euros. Tuta notes that the final amount can vary with payment platform fees and exchange rates.
  • Importing existing mail from EML or MBOX files is limited to Legend and the Unlimited business plan, and works only in the desktop clients.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Tuta Mail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 36 of the 51 other email apps we grade. It costs $40.34 a year. Tuta Mail is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Calendar: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • An email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • End-to-end encryption done properly.

What this rests on. Tuta Mail’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
