Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 8 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade

Tyme is a time tracker for Apple devices, used by freelancers and by teams. Timers run against projects and tasks that carry hourly rates, budgets and deadlines, and the app also records expenses, mileage and breaks. Statistics show workload and overtime, and timesheets export as PDF, CSV or JSON. Data syncs between a person's devices through iCloud and between team members through Tyme's team server.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Tyme, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for freelancers and teams on Apple devices

Teams are covered as long as everyone's on Apple.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $5 a month when paid by the year for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $59.99 per user / year ($6.99 billed monthly), US App Store.

  3. 3

    You can try it first

    14-day free trial, fully functional

  4. 4

    It runs on 2 platforms

    macOS and iOS.

  5. 5

    Timers and tracking modes

Timers start and stop from any app with global shortcuts, and several can run at once. Entries are kept either with start and end times or as one duration per task and day.

  6. 6

    Location-based tracking

Up to 20 work locations can be set as geofences. A timer starts when you arrive and stops when you leave, with a minimum stay and a reverse mode.

  7. 7

    Projects, budgets and costs

Projects and tasks carry hourly rates, planned time, budgets, due dates and a billable flag. Expenses, fixed costs, flat rates and mileage are tracked alongside time.

  8. 8

    A 2.4 GPA, above 8 of 42

That is against the other time tracking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

The plain part of Tyme you could make: time tracking and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for freelancers and teams on Apple devices

Tyme is a time tracker for people on Apple devices: timers start from any app, projects carry rates and budgets, and it logs mileage and expenses. Teams are covered as long as everyone's on Apple. But there's no free plan, the app turns read-only after the 14-day trial, invoices need a plugin, the web login is still beta, and anyone on Windows or Android should look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardTymeGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyC$59.99 a user a year on the US App Store works out at $5 a month, middling for this category, and it covers Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch on up to 5 devices. Monthly is $6.99. Team plans start at $13.99 a month for 2 users, so about $7 a head.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. You get a 14-day trial that's fully functional, with no word on whether it wants a card. After the trial, or a cancelled subscription, the app goes read-only and you're left looking at your own data.
FeaturesBSeveral timers at once with global shortcuts, geofences that start the clock at up to 20 work locations, projects with rates, budgets and due dates, expenses, flat rates and mileage, PDF, CSV and JSON timesheets, and live budgets for teams. Invoices need a plugin.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but there's little in the way: install it, start a timer from any app with a shortcut, and your own devices sync through iCloud. Teams sync through Tyme's team server.
Platforms and integrationsCApple only: Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with the web login labeled beta and no Windows or Android app listed. Inside Apple's world it hooks into Shortcuts and AppleScript, and there's a developer API with webhooks, Zapier and n8n.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Tyme is for

  • Fits if you freelance on a Mac, iPhone and Apple Watch
  • Works for small teams where everybody uses Apple devices, from $13.99 a month for 2 users

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if anyone on the team uses Windows or Android, as no app is listed and the web login is labeled beta
  • Not for you if you want invoices made in the tracker, as Tyme hands that to plugins like GrandTotal or FreshBooks
  • Not for you if you want a free plan, since the app turns read-only after the 14-day trial or a canceled subscription
  • Watch out: the website shows local-currency prices, so the dollar figures here are US App Store prices
  • Pricey if you pay monthly, at $6.99 a month against $59.99 a year

Good to know

Good for

  • Freelancers who work on a Mac, iPhone and Apple Watch
  • Small teams that all use Apple devices
  • German-speaking businesses that invoice with Lexware Office or sevdesk

Worth knowing

  • Tyme runs on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch only; a web login is labelled beta and no Windows or Android app is listed.
  • There is no free plan: after the 14-day trial or a canceled subscription the app becomes read-only.
  • The website shows prices in the visitor's local currency; the dollar figures here are in-app purchase prices from the US App Store.
  • Invoices are not made in Tyme itself but through plugins for tools such as GrandTotal, Lexware Office and FreshBooks.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Tyme you could make: time tracking and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 24 of the 42 other time tracking apps grade higher. It costs $59.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Time tracking and reports: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, GrandTotal, Lexware Office and sevdesk among them, and has an API.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app and Shortcuts.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Tyme’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
