Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 73 of the 79 other project management tools we grade

WeKan is an MIT-licensed kanban board application that most users install on their own server from a Snap, a Docker image or a bundle for Windows, Mac and Linux. Boards hold cards in lists and swimlanes and can also be shown as a table, calendar or Gantt chart. Its maintainer runs a free hosted app and a paid hosted version with the Admin Panel from servers in Finland.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about WeKan, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for a free open-source kanban board with swimlanes

WeKan is an open-source kanban board with swimlanes, free to run on your own server under the MIT license or hosted by the maintainer for €50 a year.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at about $4.67 a month

As its pricing page puts it: €50 per year for hosted WeKan with the Admin Panel.

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The MIT-licensed server is free to install on your own machine. A free hosted WeKan app at boards.wekan.team gives Normal User access with no Admin Panel.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, Windows and Android.

  5. 5

    Boards, lists and swimlanes

Cards sit in lists that run across swimlanes, with work-in-progress limits, collapsible lists and multi-selection for moving or recoloring many cards at once.

  6. 6

    Board views

Besides the swimlane and list layouts, a board can be shown as a table, a calendar, a Gantt chart or a statistics view.

  7. 7

    Detailed cards

Cards carry checklists, subtasks, custom fields, attachments, received, start, due and end dates, card-to-card dependencies and templates.

  8. 8

    A 3.2 GPA, above 73 of 79

That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace WeKan you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for a free open-source kanban board with swimlanes

WeKan is an open-source kanban board with swimlanes, free to run on your own server under the MIT license or hosted by the maintainer for €50 a year. The phone and Windows apps are only browsers in a wrapper, iOS gets nothing, only the newest release is supported, the free hosted app has no Admin Panel, and paid services are non-refundable.

ToolGPA report cardWeKanGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree and substantial: the server is MIT licensed, and if you'd rather not run one, hosted WeKan with the Admin Panel and a custom domain is €50 for the year, about what this category charges for one seat for one month. Support contracts are separate, from €500 a year.
Free plan and trialAFree outright, two ways. Install the MIT-licensed server and the first registered user gets the Admin Panel, or use the maintainer's free hosted app, which gives Normal User access and no Admin Panel. The boards themselves cost nothing either way.
FeaturesBIt covers the whole job: cards in lists and swimlanes with WIP limits, boards flipped to a table, calendar, Gantt chart or statistics view, cards with checklists, subtasks, custom fields and card-to-card dependencies, rules pairing a trigger with an action, and nine roles a board.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and the usual route is installing it yourself from a Snap, a Docker image or a bundle, where only the newest release is supported and you're asked to keep daily backups. Hosted WeKan spares you all that, free without the Admin Panel or €50 a year with it.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb with integrations: a public API, outgoing webhooks, imports from Trello, Jira, Kanboard, CSV and Excel, and storage on MinIO, Azure or Google Cloud. The Android and Windows store apps are full-screen browsers with no native functions, and iOS users get pointed at a browser.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who WeKan is for

  • Fits if you want a kanban board on your own server, free under the MIT license
  • Works for teams leaving Trello, Jira or Kanboard with boards to import

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want proper phone apps, because the store apps are web browsers in a wrapper and iOS has none
  • Not for you if nobody can look after a server and its daily backups, unless you pay €50 a year for hosting
  • Tight if you're on the free hosted app, which gives Normal User access with no Admin Panel
  • Pricey if you need a support contract, which starts at €500 a year for 5 hours
  • Watch out: only the newest release is supported, prices are in euros, and paid services are final with no refunds

Good to know

Good for

  • Organizations that want a kanban board on their own server
  • Teams moving from Trello, Jira or Kanboard with boards to import
  • Small teams that want low-cost hosting on servers in the EU

Worth knowing

  • The free hosted app gives Normal User access only; the Admin Panel needs the €50 per year SaaS or a self-hosted server.
  • The Android and Windows store apps are full-screen web browsers with no native functions, and iOS users are pointed to a browser.
  • Prices are listed in euros only, and paid services are sold business-to-business as final, non-refundable purchases.
  • The install page says only the newest release is supported and asks self-hosters to keep at least daily backups.

It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 71 of 79) and worst on ease of use (C, above 2).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace WeKan you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 73 of the 79 other project management tools we grade. It costs $56.03 a year. WeKan is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Kanban boards and Gantt & timelines: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
  • Apps for Windows and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • Several people working in it at the same moment.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. WeKan’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
