Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 4 of the 17 other file storage and sync services we grade
WeTransfer is a file transfer service for sending large files by email or download link. Recipients can download without creating an account, and senders can add passwords, set expiry dates and track downloads. It is built for delivering files rather than syncing folders, with a free plan for non-commercial use and paid plans that lift the monthly transfer limits.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about WeTransfer, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The person you send to signs up for nothing, they just download, and on a Mac you send from the menu bar or a right-click in Finder.
- 1
Best for sending a big file to someone with no account
WeTransfer gets a big file to someone else by email or link, and they don't need an account to download it.
- 2
Paid plans start at $8 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $8 per month, billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Free plan for individual, non-commercial use: share and receive up to 3 GB a month, 10 transfers a month, and transfer expiry of up to 3 days.
- 4
It runs on 4 platforms
Web, macOS, iOS and Android.
- 5
Transfers by email or link
Files are sent to recipients by email or shared as a download link. Anyone can download them without logging in or signing up.
- 6
Passwords and expiry dates
A transfer can be protected with a password and given an expiry date. Free transfers expire after up to 3 days; Ultimate allows unlimited expiry.
- 7
File requests
A request link lets other people upload files to the account holder, who can then track and manage what has been received.
- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 4 of 17
That is against the other file storage and sync services we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for sending a big file to someone with no account
WeTransfer gets a big file to someone else by email or link, and they don't need an account to download it. It doesn't sync folders, Free is non-commercial with 3 GB and 10 transfers a month, there's no Windows app, and lifting the size limit takes Ultimate at $23 a month.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Starter is $8 a month, above this category's $5 middle, and it buys transfers rather than storage: 300 GB a month moved, not kept. No size limit, branding and unlimited expiry wait on Ultimate at $23. Dropbox Plus is $9.99 for 2 TB of storage with 50 GB transfers thrown in. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free moves up to 3 GB a month over 10 transfers, each link dead within 3 days. That's one photo album a month, and the plan is for non-commercial use only, so the moment it's client work you're paying. |
| Features | C | It does its one job completely: send by email or link, with passwords, expiry dates, file requests and download counts, and nobody at the other end needs an account. That job is a slice of this category's, though. No folder syncing, and end-to-end encryption is listed for Enterprise only. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.8 from about 79,000 App Store ratings, as high as anything here. The person you send to signs up for nothing, they just download, and on a Mac you send from the menu bar or a right-click in Finder. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, a Mac app, iPhone and Android, so Windows people work in the browser. Beyond that there's nothing: no integrations and no API listed, so it doesn't join up with anything you already use. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who WeTransfer is for
- Fits if you send big files to clients who shouldn't need an account to get them
- Works for freelancers and studios who want their own branding on the download page, on Ultimate
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a synced folder, as it's built for sending files, not keeping them in step
- Not for you if it's for work and you won't pay, since the Free plan is non-commercial only
- Pricey if you send very large files, because no size limit means Ultimate at $23 a month
- Tight if you stay free: 3 GB and 10 transfers a month, and each link expires within 3 days
- Watch out: storage stops at 2 TB on any plan, Teams needs 2 users, and end-to-end encryption is Enterprise only
Good to know
Good for
- Sending large files to clients who should not need an account
- Freelancers and studios that want branded delivery pages
- Occasional personal transfers within the free monthly allowance
Worth knowing
- The Free plan is for non-commercial use only and is capped at 3 GB and 10 transfers a month.
- Starter is limited to 300 GB of transfers a month; removing the size limit needs Ultimate at $23 a month.
- An account stores up to 2 TB of transfers by default on any plan, and WeTransfer says it does not offer unlimited storage.
- Teams needs at least 2 users, and single sign-on and end-to-end encryption are listed only for Enterprise.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of WeTransfer you could make: documents. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 10 of the 17 other file storage and sync services grade higher. It costs $96 a year.
What you could make
- Documents: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Storing and serving files for other people.
- A native app living in the menu bar.
- Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
What this rests on. WeTransfer’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
