Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 57 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade

WinDirStat is a free, open-source disk usage analyzer and cleanup assistant for Microsoft Windows. It scans drives, folders, network shares or MTP devices and shows what takes up the space through a list of the largest files, file-type statistics and visualizations such as a treemap. It can also search for files and duplicates, export CSV or JSON reports and run cleanup tools. It is licensed under the GNU GPL v3 or later and is free in personal and commercial settings.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about WinDirStat, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, but nothing needs setting up: install it, point it at a drive, read the picture.

The report card

Best for finding what's filling a Windows drive for free

WinDirStat scans a drive and shows what's filling it, with a list of the biggest files and a treemap where the largest files are the largest blocks. It's free and open source, at home or at work. It only runs on Windows, the fast NTFS scan needs admin rights, and file recovery is only an attempt, so Mac and Linux users need something else.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAIt costs nothing and you just download it. Free software under the GNU GPL v3 or later, and the site says you can use it free of charge in personal or commercial settings.
Free plan and trialAThe complete app is free, as an installer, a portable archive, a Microsoft Store package or through winget, Chocolatey or Scoop. There's no paid edition to be nudged towards.
FeaturesCScans drives, shares and MTP devices, then shows the biggest files, file types, treemaps, sunbursts and flame graphs, finds duplicates by content and exports CSV or JSON. It does disk usage fully, and that's a small job; the file recovery is described only as an attempt, on local NTFS, exFAT and FAT.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but nothing needs setting up: install it, point it at a drive, read the picture. The one thing to know is that the faster NTFS scan only kicks in if you run it elevated.
Platforms and integrationsDWindows only, built and tested for Windows 7 through 11 and Server 2008 R2 through 2025. One operating system, and the site itself sends Mac and Linux users off to GrandPerspective and QDirStat.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who it is not for

  • Not for you if you're counting on it to bring back deleted files, since recovery is only an attempt on local NTFS, exFAT and FAT drives
  • Not for you if you can't run apps as administrator, because the fast NTFS scan needs that
  • Watch out: only Windows 7 through 11 and Server 2008 R2 through 2025 are supported

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

WinDirStat is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

What you could not

  • Deleting system files without breaking anything.
  • A real app for Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.

What this rests on. WinDirStat’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
