Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.0
GPA, above 84 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade
WizTree is a disk space analyzer from Antibody Software for Windows and, as WizTreeMac, for macOS. It scans a drive and shows which files and folders use the most space in a tree view, a visual treemap and a list of the largest files, and it can find duplicate files and export file data to CSV. It is free for personal use; commercial use needs a supporter code priced by the size of the organization.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about WizTree, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It's free at home with every scanning feature, and on Windows it reads the drive's Master File Table straight from the disk.
- 1
Best for finding what's filling your drive at home, fast
WizTree scans a drive and shows what's eating the space, as a tree, a treemap and a list of the largest files.
- 2
What it costs
Paid plans start at $25 one-time purchase (Individual supporter code, 1 year of upgrades).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free for personal use with every scanning feature. Commercial use is not allowed, a Donate button is shown, exports carry a donation message and there is no support.
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
Windows and macOS.
- 5
Direct MFT scanning on Windows
On NTFS drives the Windows version reads the Master File Table straight from the disk, which needs administrator rights, and falls back to standard scanning elsewhere.
- 6
Visual treemap
Draws every file and folder as a block sized by the space it takes, so large files and large collections of small files can be spotted at a glance.
- 7
Largest and duplicate files
File View lists every file and folder in order of size. Duplicates are found by name, size and optionally date, and shown under the file they match.

The report card
Best for finding what's filling your drive at home, fast
WizTree scans a drive and shows what's eating the space, as a tree, a treemap and a list of the largest files. It's free at home with every scanning feature, and on Windows it reads the drive's Master File Table straight from the disk. Work use needs a supporter code from $25, a code covers only a year of upgrades, and the Mac version lacks the fast scan.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free to download and use at home, and $25 once for an individual supporter code if you need it at work, which is under a year of what paid utilities here charge. Businesses pay by headcount per site, $100 for up to 5 staff up to $500 for 100. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The free version has every scanning feature: tree view, treemap, file search, CSV export and the duplicate finder. A home user never hits a wall. You get a Donate button, a donation line on exports and no support, and commercial use isn't allowed. |
| Features | C | A treemap, every file listed by size, duplicate finding, wildcard search, CSV export and command-line scans. That one job is done fully, and it is a small job. The listing's own gap: WizTreeMac has no equivalent of the fast Windows scan and can't yet scan MTP devices such as Android phones. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but nothing needs setting up: pick a drive, scan, and the biggest blocks on the treemap are your answer. The fast scan on Windows wants administrator rights. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Two desktops and nothing else, which is one kind of device: Windows and macOS 12 or later as WizTreeMac, installable through WinGet or Homebrew, with command-line scans. No Linux, no phone app and no API. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who WizTree is for
- Fits if your drive is full at home and you want the answer for free
- Works for people on both Windows and a Mac who want the same tool on each
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a free tool for the office, as commercial use needs a supporter code from $25
- Pricey if you want every new version, because a code covers one year of upgrades and a renewal is 50% off, not free
- Not for you if you need to scan an Android phone from a Mac, since WizTreeMac can't scan MTP devices yet
- Watch out: WizTreeMac needs macOS 12 or later and has no match for the fast Windows scan
- Tight if you're on the free version and need help, as it comes with no support and adds a donation line to exports
Good to know
Good for
- Finding what is filling up a Windows or Mac drive
- IT staff auditing drives with CSV exports and command-line scans
- Home users, since personal use is free
Worth knowing
- The free version is for personal use only; commercial use needs a supporter code priced by the organization's total staff, per site.
- A supporter code covers versions released within one year of purchase. Newer versions need a new code, offered at 50% off.
- WizTreeMac needs macOS 12 or later, has no equivalent of the Windows MFT scan and cannot yet scan MTP devices such as Android phones.
- The free version shows a Donate button, adds a donation message to exports and comes with no support.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
It depends on the utility: a converter or a calculator is an afternoon.
WizTree sits between: not beyond making, and not a weekend's work either. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $25, paid once, it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.
What you could not
- Deleting system files without breaking anything.
- A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
What this rests on. WizTree’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
