Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 11 of the 69 other writing tools we grade
Writefull gives language feedback on research writing using models trained on published journal articles. It works as an add-in for Microsoft Word, as an integration built into the Overleaf LaTeX editor, and in the browser as Writefull X, with tools to paraphrase, change style, summarize, and generate titles and abstracts. A free account has a daily quota, Premium removes it, and two further tools, Revise and Cite, come only with an institutional license.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Writefull, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Its own models cover English only, and Revise and Cite need an institutional license.

The report card
Best for language checks inside Word and Overleaf
Writefull gives language feedback on research writing inside Word, Overleaf and the browser, using models trained on journal articles. The free account stops at a daily quota whose size isn't published, and Premium is $150 a year or $21 a month, with no refunds. Its own models cover English only, and Revise and Cite need an institutional license.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | Premium is $12.50 a month billed annually ($150), past the $12 dearer quarter for writing tools and half again the $8.33 middle, and it's the only way to lift the daily quota. Monthly is $21, no refunds are issued, and Revise and Cite aren't included at all. |
| Free plan and trial | C | A free account gets language suggestions and most writing features in Word, Overleaf and Writefull X, but only up to a daily quota that resets the next day, and the listing can't say how big it is. Custom GPT edit prompts and Supercomplete are left out. |
| Features | C | It covers language feedback and not much past it, a smaller job than most of this category: fixes from models trained on journal articles, tools to paraphrase or tighten a passage, title and abstract generators, and LaTeX on request in Overleaf. Its own models cover English only. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, so we go on the listing: it works inside Word as an add-in and is built into Overleaf, so there's nothing to set up and no pasting into another window. A free account is enough to see whether its suggestions suit you. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A Microsoft Word add-in, an integration built into Overleaf, and Writefull X in the browser, which is where most papers get written, and that's what earns the B. The listing shows no desktop or phone app of its own. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Writefull is for
- Fits if you write papers or a thesis in English and want feedback trained on journal articles
- Works for LaTeX writers who want the language check inside Overleaf
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $21 a month against $150 for the year, and no refunds are issued
- Not for you if you write in another language: its own models cover English only, and the GPT switch is in Overleaf, not Word
- Tight if you stay free on a long paper: suggestions stop at a daily quota, and Supercomplete and custom GPT prompts are Premium
- Watch out: Revise and Cite aren't in Premium or Group, and need an institutional license at an unpublished price
- Skip it if you want a desktop or phone app of its own, as it runs only inside Word, Overleaf and the browser
Good to know
Good for
- Researchers and students writing papers or theses in English
- LaTeX users who want language checks inside Overleaf
- Departments that want one group license for up to 100 people
Worth knowing
- The Free plan has a daily quota on language suggestions and writing features.
- Writefull Revise and Writefull Cite are not part of Premium or Group plans; they need an institutional license.
- Writefull's own language models give feedback on English text only; other languages go through GPT.
- It runs inside Word, Overleaf and a browser. The terms of use state that refunds are not issued.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A writing app at its plainest is a page that saves what you type.
Writefull sits between: not beyond making, and not a weekend's work either. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $150 a year.
What you could make
- It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.
What you could not
- Grammar checking as you type, wherever you type.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Writefull’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
