Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 72 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Xournal++ is an open-source desktop app for handwritten notes, built for use with a stylus or drawing tablet on Windows, macOS and Linux. Pages can use paper-style backgrounds or sit on top of a PDF, and notes can include shapes, images, typed text, LaTeX formulas and audio recordings. It is a rewrite of the older Xournal program and saves journals as local .xopp files.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Xournal++, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Mac users must run two terminal commands before it opens, and ink exported to PDF can't be edited afterward.

  5. 5

The report card

Best for handwritten notes and PDF markup on a computer

Xournal++ is a free, open-source app for writing by hand on a computer with a pen or tablet, including over PDFs that you export again as PDFs. It stops at the desktop: work on the phone and tablet app has stalled, and there's no sync. Mac users must run two terminal commands before it opens, and ink exported to PDF can't be edited afterward.

ToolGPA report cardXournal++Graded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAIt costs nothing, in a category whose middle plan asks $6 a month. Open source under the GNU GPL version 2, every download on the project's site free, and no paid edition anywhere.
Free plan and trialAAll of it is free: the stable builds, the nightly builds, and the Windows version in the Microsoft Store. There's nothing to upgrade to.
FeaturesCFor handwriting it's complete, and handwriting is a smaller job than notes: pressure-sensitive pens, writing over PDFs, shapes, layers, LaTeX formulas, audio recorded as you write, Lua plugins. Its own pages name the catches: exported ink can't be edited again, and the export drops annotations the PDF already had.
Ease of useCNo rating on record, and the Mac build is a chore: two terminal commands before it will even open. On Windows and Linux you install it and start writing, and LaTeX needs its own install either way.
Platforms and integrationsCComputers only: Windows, macOS and Linux. The project says work on the Android and iOS app has stalled and the web app is gone, there's no sync, and it connects to no other apps.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Xournal++ is for

  • Fits if you take handwritten notes with a Wacom, Huion or XP-Pen tablet on a computer
  • Works for writing over lecture slides or forms as PDFs, with LaTeX formulas beside your ink

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you write on an iPad or an Android tablet, because it's desktop only and the mobile app has stalled
  • Not for you if you're on a Mac and avoid the terminal, as the app needs two commands before it opens
  • Tight if you want notes synced, since each journal is a local .xopp file and nothing syncs it for you
  • Watch out: moving a journal or its PDF breaks the link between them unless you use attach mode
  • Watch out: ink exported to PDF can't be edited again, and the export drops annotations the PDF already had

Good to know

Good for

  • Handwritten notes with a stylus or drawing tablet on a computer
  • Writing over PDFs and exporting the annotated result
  • Math and science notes that mix handwriting with LaTeX formulas

Worth knowing

  • Desktop only: the project says development of the separate Android and iOS app has stalled and the web app is no longer available.
  • A journal is stored separately from its background PDF, so moving either file breaks the link unless attach mode is used.
  • The macOS release will not open until two terminal commands are run to clear and re-sign the app.
  • Annotations exported to PDF cannot be edited afterward, and the export drops annotations built into the source PDF.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Xournal++ is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

What you could make

  • Notes: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
  • Hooks into the device itself: handwriting.

What this rests on. Xournal++’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
