Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 28 of the 51 other email apps we grade
Yahoo Mail is a free, ad-supported email service for the web, iOS and Android. It sorts important messages into a Primary tab, summarizes and drafts email with AI, and can also manage Gmail, Outlook and AOL accounts from the same inbox. The paid Yahoo Mail Plus plan removes ads, raises storage from 20 GB to 200 GB and adds temporary addresses and auto-forwarding.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Yahoo Mail, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Sign up and the Primary tab sorts for you.
- 1
Best for a free 20 GB inbox, if you can live with ads
If this would be a spare address you rarely check, look elsewhere.
- 2
Paid plans start at $5 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $5 per month (Yahoo Mail Plus).
- 3
There is a free plan
Standard plan: 20 GB of storage, other accounts such as Gmail, Outlook and AOL in the same inbox, one-tap unsubscribe and up to 3 temporary addresses. The inbox shows ads.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Primary inbox
Puts the most important messages in a Primary tab so that newsletters and promotions stay out of the way.
- 6
AI summaries and AI compose
Summarizes long emails into key points and action items, and helps write messages in a professional, casual or friendly tone.
- 7
Planner
Turns emails into tasks and events. The mobile app gathers flights, reservations and bill due dates into one view, next to an existing Gmail calendar.
- 8
Refunds: 14 days
Yahoo's general terms say charges are nonrefundable, but Mail Plus carves out an exception: 14 days from a first purchase or a yearly renewal to ask for your money back, once per customer, and only if you bought on the website. You have to write in for it, which is why it isn't an A.
- 9
A 2.6 GPA, above 28 of 51
That is against the other email apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 10
Keep it
To replace Yahoo Mail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for a free 20 GB inbox, if you can live with ads
Yahoo Mail is a free, ad-supported inbox for the web, iPhone and Android, with 20 GB of space against 15 at Gmail and Outlook. The free inbox shows ads, auto-forwarding needs the $5-a-month Plus plan, there's no desktop app, and a mailbox left unopened for 12 months is wiped for good unless you pay. If this would be a spare address you rarely check, look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Plus is $5 a month, right in the middle of this category, which runs from about $4 at the low end to $8 in the middle. You get 200 GB and up to 500 throwaway addresses for it. Microsoft takes the ads out of Outlook for $1.99, and forwarding and a mailbox that never expires shouldn't need a subscription at all. |
| Free plan and trial | B | 20 GB free, against 15 GB at Gmail and Outlook, plus Gmail, Outlook and AOL accounts in the same inbox. The catches: ads, forwarding held back for Plus, only 3 temporary addresses, and 12 unopened months wipes the lot. |
| Features | C | The inbox basics plus one-tap unsubscribe, delete by sender, a Primary tab, AI summaries, package tracking and a Planner. One gap is core: auto-forwarding to another address is a paid feature, and free accounts get only 3 temporary addresses. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.69 from about 4.8 million App Store ratings, a shade below the top of this category. Sign up and the Primary tab sorts for you. It won't sit still, though: reviewers grumble about weekly updates, moving layouts and streaks they can't fully switch off. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A browser, an iPhone app and an Android app, and it pulls in Gmail, Outlook and AOL accounts so one inbox covers everything. No desktop app is listed and there's no API, so it stops short of everywhere. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Yahoo Mail is for
- Fits if you want a free address with 20 GB of space and can put up with ads
- Works for clearing out newsletters, with one-tap unsubscribe and delete by sender
Who it is not for
- Skip it if this would be a spare address you rarely open, since 12 unopened months deletes everything for good
- Pricey if you only want the ads gone: that's $5 a month, against $1.99 from Microsoft for Outlook
- Tight if you need mail forwarded or more than 3 temporary addresses, since both are on Plus
- Not for you if you want a desktop app or an API, as it's a browser tab or a phone app
- Watch out: the App Store lists 100GB at $1.99 and 1TB at $9.99 that the Plus page doesn't explain
Good to know
Good for
- People who want a free address with 20 GB of storage
- Clearing out newsletters and bulk mail quickly
- Managing Gmail, Outlook and AOL accounts from one inbox
Worth knowing
- The free plan shows ads. Removing them needs Yahoo Mail Plus at $5 per month.
- Auto-forwarding to another account is a Plus feature, and free accounts are limited to 3 temporary addresses.
- A mailbox not opened for 12 months has its emails, folders and contacts permanently deleted, Yahoo's help page says. An active Plus subscription prevents this.
- The US App Store listing shows other in-app purchases with no billing period, such as a 100GB plan at $1.99 and a 1TB plan at $9.99, which the Plus page does not describe.
What people say
- 4.7on the App Store, from 4,822,292 ratings
What they like
- Praise is for tools that help with a large, old mailbox: reviewers mention quick search and views that pick out attachments, and a commenter the option to delete and block everything from one sender.
What they don’t
- Reviewers and commenters report finding years of old mail gone after a long spell of not signing in or not opening a folder.
- Reviewers and a commenter object to features they say nobody asked for, such as summaries placed above each message and streaks for checking mail, and to an interface that keeps changing.
8 App Store reviews about Yahoo Mail, six of them three stars or lower and three more than three years old, and about 14 Hacker News comments from June 2025 to July 2026

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Yahoo Mail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $60 a year.
What you could make
- Tasks: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- An email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail.
- Filters that read every message as it arrives.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Yahoo Mail’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
Part 05 · Refunds

Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help
What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Yahoo Mail’s own terms and help pages.
Refunds and cancelling
Good · checked Oct 18, 2026
Yahoo's general terms say charges are nonrefundable, but Mail Plus carves out an exception: 14 days from a first purchase or a yearly renewal to ask for your money back, once per customer, and only if you bought on the website. You have to write in for it, which is why it isn't an A. Cancelling is yours to do in a few clicks on the subscriptions page, so it isn't a C either.
- Refund window
- 14 days
- How you cancel
- Yourself, in settings
- Getting your money back
The Yahoo Mail Plus help article says that if you are not satisfied for any reason you can contact Yahoo within 14 days of the initial monthly or annual purchase, or of an annual renewal, and request a refund, one refund per customer. It applies only to purchases made through the Yahoo Mail website; App Store and Google Play purchases follow those stores' rules. Yahoo's terms otherwise say charges are nonrefundable.
Stated on help.yahoo.com- How to cancel Yahoo Mail
Mail Plus bought on the website is cancelled from the Subscriptions page: pick the subscription, click Manage next to Subscribed since, choose Cancel, give a reason and confirm. In the Yahoo Mail app it is under Settings, then Manage subscription. Yahoo's terms say a fee-based service can be cancelled at any time by logging in and terminating it, and one bought in an app store is cancelled there.
- Sign in to your Yahoo Subscriptions page
- Select Yahoo Mail Plus from the Yahoo subscriptions list
- Next to Subscribed since, click Manage, then choose Cancel
- Select a reason for cancelling
- Click Cancel subscription
- What you keep afterwards
Yahoo's article on inactive mailboxes says a Yahoo Mail mailbox not opened for 12 months stops receiving mail and has its emails, folders, contacts and settings permanently deleted, after warnings at 90, 60 and 30 days, and that an active Mail Plus subscription prevents that deletion. The Mail Plus help article adds that when the service ends, ads begin appearing again.
Stated on help.yahoo.com- Renewals
Yahoo's terms say it uses auto-renewal for many fee-based services and will renew and charge the payment method on file at the then-current price unless you cancel at least 48 hours before the end of the current period, with at least 30 days' notice of any price increase. The Mail Plus article warns that the card on file may be updated automatically, even with a new number or expiry date.
Stated on legal.yahoo.com
In your favour
- Fourteen days to change your mind, and the window comes round again at a yearly renewal.
- You cancel yourself, on the subscriptions page or from Settings in the Mail app.
- Yahoo's terms promise at least 30 days' notice before any price increase.
- The terms say you can end a paid service at any time by signing in and terminating it.
Watch out for
- One refund per customer, and only on purchases made through the Yahoo Mail website.
- You cannot refund yourself: the 14-day refund has to be asked for.
- The terms want the cancellation at least 48 hours before the period ends, or the renewal goes through.
- Bought Plus in the App Store or on Google Play? That store's refund rules apply instead.
Customer support
Excellent · checked Oct 18, 2026
Paying for Mail Plus buys you a person around the clock: Yahoo sells 24/7 account support as a subscriber perk and calls it live help for billing, password resets and account recovery, with priority over free users. There is a large help library behind it. The reservations are that the page never says whether that live help is chat or phone, and that free users may find no contact option at all.
Ways to get help
Live chat
Yahoo's support article says help may come by chat, depending on your question and the terms for your region, reached by choosing a product in Help Central and clicking Contact Us where it is offered. The Mail Plus page describes the subscriber perk as live, around-the-clock help.
Stated on help.yahoo.comEmail
The same article says support may come by email, again through the Contact Us route in Help Central, and warns that there is no contact option for every product or issue.
Stated on help.yahoo.comHelp centre
Yahoo Mail Help, open to anyone without signing in, with articles grouped by topic and a separate account section covering subscriptions, billing and cancelling.
Stated on help.yahoo.com
Not listed on Yahoo Mail’s pages: phone.
- When people answer
The Mail Plus page lists 24/7 account support among the subscriber perks and describes it as live, around-the-clock help for general Yahoo account questions such as billing, password resets and account recovery. No hours are stated for the free Standard plan.
Stated on mail.yahoo.com- How fast it says it replies
Its pages do not say.
- What depends on your plan
Round-the-clock account support is sold as a Mail Plus perk, and Yahoo's article on inactive mailboxes also lists priority customer support among the benefits of a subscription. Free Standard users are left with the help articles and the Contact Us route where it exists.
Stated on help.yahoo.com
In your favour
- Five dollars a month buys live help at any hour, which is more than most email services offer.
- Yahoo states the hours plainly: around the clock, every day, for subscribers.
- Plus subscribers are put in a priority queue, in Yahoo's own words.
- The help library is open to everyone and covers billing, cancelling and refunds.
Watch out for
- The Plus page never says whether the live help is a chat or a phone call.
- Yahoo warns there is no contact option for every product or issue, which bites hardest on the free plan.
- The round-the-clock support is for general account questions, not described as covering everything in Mail.
- No page states how quickly Yahoo aims to reply to anything in writing.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Yahoo's help articles on managing and cancelling a Mail Plus subscription, on managing subscriptions and payment methods, on inactive mailboxes and on getting help from customer support, the Yahoo Mail Plus page with its questions and answers, Yahoo's terms of service and the Yahoo Mail help centre. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
