Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 43 of the 69 other writing tools we grade

Zettlr is a free and open-source Markdown editor for Windows, macOS and Linux, built around academic writing. It connects to reference managers such as Zotero to insert citations, links notes Zettelkasten-style, and exports papers and presentations through Pandoc profiles and templates. Files stay on the user's computer, with no forced cloud sync and no telemetry, and development is funded by donations.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Zettlr, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The editor itself can show anything from raw Markdown to rich text.

The report card

Best for free academic writing in Markdown

Zettlr is a free, open-source Markdown editor for academic writing that pulls citations from Zotero, links notes Zettelkasten-style and exports through Pandoc. It's desktop only, on Windows 10 or newer, macOS 12 or newer and Linux, with no phone or web app and no sync of its own. Citations need an outside reference manager, and grammar past the spellchecker means connecting LanguageTool.

ToolGPA report cardZettlrGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree and open source, with no paid tier at all, in a category where paid plans start around $8.33 a month in the middle. Development runs on voluntary donations through Patreon, PayPal, GitHub Sponsors or Ko-fi.
Free plan and trialAThe whole app is free on Windows, macOS and Linux. There's no paid tier, so nothing is held back and there's no cap to reach.
FeaturesCIt covers academic Markdown by leaning on other programs: citations come from a library you keep in Zotero, JabRef or Juris-M, export runs through Pandoc, and grammar past the spellchecker means connecting LanguageTool. Its own parts are Zettelkasten links and a graph view.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and the academic parts take wiring: citations come from an outside reference manager, export profiles run on Pandoc, and grammar checks need LanguageTool connected. The editor itself can show anything from raw Markdown to rich text.
Platforms and integrationsCWindows 10 or newer, macOS 12 or newer and Linux. It hooks up to Zotero, JabRef, Juris-M, LanguageTool and Pandoc, but those are other desktop programs: this is computers only, with no mobile or web app and no cloud sync of its own.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Zettlr is for

  • Fits if you write papers or a thesis in Markdown and keep your references in Zotero
  • Works for people who keep a Zettelkasten of linked notes on their own computer

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you write on a phone or in a browser, as it's desktop only
  • Not for you if you want sync built in, because files stay on your computer with no cloud service of its own
  • Too light for grammar checking out of the box, since anything past the spellchecker means connecting LanguageTool
  • Watch out: citations need a library kept in Zotero, JabRef or Juris-M, and exports run through Pandoc profiles
  • Tight if your computer is older, as downloads are listed for Windows 10 or newer and macOS 12 or newer

Good to know

Good for

  • Researchers and students writing papers or theses in Markdown
  • Zotero users who want citations inside a plain-text editor
  • People who keep a Zettelkasten of linked notes
  • Writers who want their files kept on their own computer

Worth knowing

  • Desktop only: downloads are listed for macOS 12 or newer, Windows 10 or newer and Linux, with no mobile or web app.
  • It has no cloud service of its own: files stay on the computer, with no built-in cloud synchronization.
  • Citations draw on a library kept in an external reference manager such as Zotero, JabRef or Juris-M.
  • Grammar and style checking beyond the spellchecker relies on connecting LanguageTool.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Zettlr is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.

What you could make

  • Markdown, linked notes and long-form writing: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Citation records for millions of papers.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Zotero, JabRef and Juris-M among them.

What this rests on. Zettlr’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
