Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.6

GPA, above 17 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade

Zoho Invoice is a free invoicing app from Zoho for freelancers and small businesses. It sends quotes, one-off and recurring invoices with payment reminders, takes card payments through connected gateways, and also logs expenses and time against projects. It has no paid plans; the free account caps users, projects and invoices a year, and Zoho points growing businesses to its other finance apps.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Zoho Invoice, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Making and sending an invoice is the whole job here, so there isn't much to learn.

The report card

Best for free invoicing on every device

Zoho Invoice is free, with no paid plan waiting for you: quotes, recurring invoices, reminders, online payments, expenses and time tracking, on the web, your computer and your phone. It's invoicing, not accounting, so the books still live somewhere else. And the limits are real: 500 invoices a year, 2 users, 3 projects and Zoho's name on every invoice.

ToolGPA report cardZoho InvoiceGraded Oct 17, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAIt's free, and it's a real invoicing app: quotes, recurring invoices, reminders, a customer portal, expenses and time tracking. There's no paid plan at all, where paid plans in this category start around $15 a month.
Free plan and trialAEverything is free, with nothing held back for a paid tier. The caps are 2 users, 2 organizations, 3 projects and 500 invoices a year, and every invoice says Powered by Zoho Invoice.
FeaturesCQuotes, one-off and recurring invoices, reminders, online payments through several gateways, expenses, time on projects and reports. It does invoicing fully, but that's a smaller job than accounting: it hands off to Zoho Books or QuickBooks for the books.
Ease of useA4.86 from 14,879 App Store ratings, the top band. Making and sending an invoice is the whole job here, so there isn't much to learn.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, with Zoho Payments, PayPal, Stripe, Authorize.net, Zoho CRM, HubSpot, Slack and QuickBooks. That's every device plus a real list of connections.
Grade point averageExcellent, out of 4.03.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Zoho Invoice is for

  • Great if you're a freelancer sending fewer than 500 invoices a year and want to pay nothing
  • Handy when you invoice from your phone one day and your laptop the next
  • Good for teams already on Zoho CRM or Zoho Books, as it plugs straight in

Who it is not for

  • Too light for keeping the books, as it's invoicing only and hands that job to Zoho Books or QuickBooks
  • Tight if you track time on more than 3 projects, since that's the cap
  • Not for you if you only invoice now and then, as an account idle for 180 days gets deleted

Good to know

Good for

  • Freelancers who send fewer than 500 invoices a year
  • Small businesses that want free invoicing on phone and desktop
  • Teams already using Zoho CRM or Zoho Books

Worth knowing

  • The free account allows 2 users, 3 projects and 500 invoices a year, and invoices carry Powered by Zoho Invoice branding.
  • It is invoicing, not full accounting: it connects to Zoho Books or QuickBooks for the books, and Zoho points larger needs to Zoho Billing.
  • Data of an account left inactive for more than 180 days is deleted within the following 20 days, after a warning.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Zoho Invoice is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces. It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.6 is higher than 17 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade.

What you could make

  • Invoicing, expense tracking, time tracking and reports: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Zoho Payments, PayPal and Stripe among them.

What this rests on. Zoho Invoice’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
