Zoho Writer is an online word processor with real-time collaboration, tracked changes and comments, and support for Word and Google Docs formats. Its Zia assistant drafts and rewrites text, checks grammar and translates into more than 70 languages, and built-in automation generates documents, fillable forms and signature requests from templates. Writer itself is free; businesses get the paid edition with Zoho WorkDrive, and automation beyond a monthly allowance is bought in credits.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Zoho Writer, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card
Best for a free word processor on every device
Zoho Writer is a word processor that's free for you or a whole organization, with no limit on documents, on every device including Linux, and it works offline. There's no Writer plan to buy: businesses get the paid edition through Zoho WorkDrive, which starts at 3 users. Document automation past 200 free credits a month costs $0.05 a credit, and Zia's grammar checks cover four languages.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Writer itself costs nothing, for one person or a whole organisation. A business that wants the paid edition gets it with Zoho WorkDrive, from $2.50 a user a month billed annually with a 3-user minimum, well under $6.30 for this category's cheapest quarter. Automation past the free allowance is $0.05 a credit. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free outright for individuals and organisations alike, with every editing feature and no limit on the number of documents, plus 200 automation credits a month. There's no cap here that an ordinary writer would ever reach. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole document job: real-time editing with tracked changes, comments and versions, Word and Google Docs files in and out, Zia drafting and translating into 70-plus languages, merge and sign templates that fill documents from business data, a plagiarism checker and offline editing. |
| Ease of use | B | No app rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: it's a word processor, so you open it and type. The one wrinkle is that Zia's grammar and spelling checks only cover English, French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android and a browser extension, with a full offline mode in the desktop apps. It connects to Zoho CRM, Zoho Sign, Docusign and Adobe Sign, publishes to WordPress and Medium, and has an API. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Zoho Writer is for
- Fits if you want a free word processor on every device, Linux included
- Works for teams that send the same contracts, letters and forms filled in from CRM data
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a team wiki, because this is a word processor, not a knowledge base
- Pricey if you generate documents in bulk, as credits past the monthly allowance cost $0.05 each
- Not for you if you need grammar checks beyond English, French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese
- Watch out: there's no standalone paid Writer plan, so the paid edition means buying Zoho WorkDrive
- Tight if you want 1 or 2 paid seats, as WorkDrive plans start at 3 users and smaller teams must contact sales
Good to know
Good for
- Individuals who want a free word processor on every device
- Businesses generating contracts, letters and forms from CRM data
- Teams already using Zoho WorkDrive or Zoho Workplace
Worth knowing
- There is no standalone paid Writer plan; the pricing page sends businesses to a Zoho WorkDrive subscription for the paid edition.
- Document automation is metered: 200 free credits a month per organization (1,000 on the paid edition), then $0.05 a credit, falling to $0.01 at high volume.
- WorkDrive plans start at 3 users; buying 1 or 2 seats means contacting Zoho's sales team.
- Zia's grammar, spelling and style checks cover English, French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Zoho Writer you could make: documents and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 7 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.6 is higher than 51 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade. It costs $30 a year.
What you could make
- Documents and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Grammar checking as you type, wherever you type.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Zoho CRM, Zoho Sign and Docusign among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Zoho Writer’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
