Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 2 of the 12 other shift scheduling apps we grade

ZoomShift is an employee scheduling and time clock app for restaurants, retail, services, hospitality and healthcare teams. Managers build schedules from templates and availability, staff swap shifts and clock in from the web or a phone, and approved timesheets turn into payroll reports. A basic scheduling plan is free for up to 20 users at one location.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about ZoomShift, taken from its own pages and our grades.

We have no App Store rating on record for it.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for cheap scheduling with a time clock

It names no payroll connections, though, so hours leave as an export.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $2 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $2 per active user / month, billed annually (Starter).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Essentials plan, free for up to 20 users at one location: schedules up to 2 weeks ahead, team messaging, reminders, shift notes and shift confirmations. No time clock.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Schedules from templates

Shift and schedule templates, availability and time-off requests, and multi-shift assignment for groups; Premium adds auto-scheduling.

  6. 6

    Shift swaps and covers

Staff request covers and swap shifts in the app, and changes reach the team by email, text and push notifications.

  7. 7

    Web and mobile time clock

Employees clock in for assigned shifts from a browser or the iPhone and Android apps, with break and meal tracking, GPS checks and IP address whitelisting.

  8. 8

    A 2.4 GPA, above 2 of 12

That is against the other shift scheduling apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

The report card

Best for cheap scheduling with a time clock

ZoomShift keeps it simple and cheap: $2 a person a month gets you schedules, a time clock and timesheets, and teams of up to 20 at one site can schedule free. You can even pause it in quiet months. It names no payroll connections, though, so hours leave as an export.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCStarter is $2 per active user a month billed yearly, so 15 staff pay $30 a month with the time clock and timesheets included. For a team that size that's just past the cheapest quarter of this category.
Free plan and trialBEssentials is free for up to 20 users at one location, with schedules up to 2 weeks ahead, messaging, reminders and shift confirmations. No time clock, but a small single-site team can live on it.
FeaturesCTemplates, availability, swaps and covers, a web and phone time clock, timesheets and a payroll report, with auto-scheduling on Premium. The gap the listing names is payroll: no payroll connections, so hours are exported.
Ease of useCWe have no App Store rating on record for it. Schedules need staff, positions and templates set up before the first week goes out.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android. No integrations are named at all, so this B rests on the devices alone.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who ZoomShift is for

  • Great if you want a time clock and a schedule for about $2 a head
  • Handy when your business is seasonal and you'd like to pause in quiet months
  • Good for single-site teams of up to 20 who only need a shared schedule

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want hours to flow straight into your payroll software
  • Tight if you stay free, as schedules only go 2 weeks ahead and there's no time clock
  • Not for you if you need overtime warnings without paying for Premium at $4 a user

Good to know

Good for

  • Single-location teams of up to 20 that only need a shared schedule
  • Small businesses that want a low per-user price for scheduling and time clock

  • Auto-scheduling, overtime warnings and the geofenced time clock need Premium.
  • No payroll integrations are named on the site; timesheets are exported and sent to your payroll provider.
  • There is no set non-profit or education discount; the vendor says it will discuss a price on request.

It stands best on free plan and trial (B, above 7 of 12) and worst on features (C, above 0).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of ZoomShift you could make: time off and applicant tracking. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 8 of the 12 other shift scheduling apps grade higher. It costs $24 a year.

What you could make

  • Time off and applicant tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A rota the whole staff sees on their phones, with swaps and alerts.
  • Clocking in from a phone, checked against where and when.
  • A scheduler that rearranges your day as things move.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.

What this rests on. ZoomShift’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
