Who each one suits

AgenToDo

  • Mac users who follow Getting Things Done and want a guided weekly review
  • People who would rather describe a change in a sentence than click through menus
  • People moving from OmniFocus, whose keyboard model the app borrows
  • Anyone who wants tasks kept in their own iCloud and off the vendor's servers

Things 3

  • People who work only on Apple devices
  • Buyers who prefer a one-time purchase to a subscription
  • One person planning their own tasks and projects

Worth knowing

AgenToDo

  • Mac only: the site requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) on Apple silicon and says there is no Windows, Android or web version.
  • The AI features spend Setapp AI credits. Setapp plans include a monthly allowance, and extra credits are a monthly add-on from $17.99 for 15,000.
  • The site's only download route is Setapp, MacPaw's own app store, and the AI features need a Setapp account.
  • No iPhone or iPad app is listed on the vendor's site; in an August 2026 reply on its Setapp listing the developer said one was in testing.

Things 3

  • Apple devices only: the vendor states it will not work on Windows, Android, Linux or in a web browser.
  • Mac, iPhone, iPad and Vision apps are separate purchases with no bundle; all four come to $109.96.
  • Real-time sharing of to-dos or lists with other people is not supported.
  • Only the Mac app has a free trial.

Key features

AgenToDo

AI command bar
A request typed or spoken in plain language becomes a set of proposed changes shown as a preview. Nothing is applied until it is approved, and one sentence can carry several changes.
GTD structure and eleven views
Inbox, Today, Forecast, Flagged, Waiting On, Review and five more built-in views, with sequential, parallel and single-action projects, folders and nested tags.
Calendar and time blocking
Events from the Mac's calendars appear beside tasks in day, week and month views. Tasks can be dragged onto time slots, and a commitment meter shows when a day is overbooked.
Quick Entry and smart parsing
A global shortcut opens a capture window from any app. The title field picks out flags, tags, projects, people, estimates, dates and repeats, in English and Ukrainian.
iCloud sync and shared projects
Data sits in a local database and syncs through the user's own iCloud. A project can be shared with edit or view-only access, with an activity feed and task assignment.
Automation and command line
Siri, Apple Shortcuts, Spotlight indexing, interactive desktop widgets and a bundled command-line tool are included. Read.ai can pass meeting action items in for review.

Things 3

Today and This Evening
The Today list puts the day's calendar events at the top and to-dos underneath, with a separate This Evening section for tasks meant for later in the day.
Upcoming
A view of the days ahead with scheduled to-dos, repeating items, deadlines and calendar events. A to-do can be dragged to another day to reschedule it.
Projects, headings and checklists
Headings split a project into categories or milestones, and a single to-do can carry a checklist of smaller steps along with notes written in Markdown.
Dates in plain words
The Jump Start popover accepts dates typed as "Tomorrow", "Saturday" or "in four days", and a time-based reminder can be added to any to-do.
Quick Entry and Quick Find
Quick Entry on Mac creates a to-do while you are working in another app. Quick Find searches projects, to-dos and tags as you type.
Things Cloud sync
To-dos sync between your devices through the vendor's own Things Cloud service at no extra charge.
