| Value for money | ADeluxe is $34.00 once, for one person on any number of PCs, and the licence doesn't expire. Paid plans in this category typically start at $5.99 a month, so that's under six months of a subscription. A later major version costs 50% of the price. | AIt's free software under the GPL, version 3 or later. Every download on the project page costs nothing, and the only money mentioned is a link to a donation page. |
| Free plan and trial | BThe Lite Edition is free with no expiry, unlimited notes and folders, and you may use it at work. But it leaves out a lot: encryption, images, file attachments, tables, alarms, the recycle bin and automatic backups. | AAll of it is free: the Windows installer and portable archive, the Linux packages and the macOS installer. There's no paid tier to hold anything back. |
| Features | BA free-form tree of folders, search that filters as you type, a rich text editor, and in Deluxe passwords on the whole file or single folders, alarms and scheduled backups. Solid for a desk. But there's no cloud sync, so moving to another PC means copying the file across. | BNested nodes, rich text, code with syntax highlighting, images, embedded files, LaTeX equations and find and replace across the whole tree. Solid. But tables only hold plain text, there's no sync of its own on the listing, and the online manual is described as old and discontinued. |
| Ease of use | BWe have no store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. It's a program you install and use, with no account to make. A portable version runs straight off a USB drive. | BInstall it, make a document and start adding nodes. There's no App Store rating on record to go by, so a B is as high as we go. Don't lean on the manual, which the project page calls old and discontinued. |
| Platforms and integrations | DWindows only. The FAQ suggests Wine-style layers for Mac and Linux and remote desktop tools for phones, which says it all. There are no mobile apps, no web version and nothing it connects to. | BWindows, Mac and Linux, with a portable Windows build and Linux packages from PPA to Flatpak and Snap. There's no official mobile app. The project page points to SourCherry, a third-party Android project, and the listing shows no integrations. |

Worth knowing
AllMyNotes Organizer

- There is no cloud sync; moving data to another computer means copying the .ddb file or following the maker's separate sync instructions.
- The free Lite Edition leaves out encryption, alarms, images, file attachments, tables, the recycle bin and automatic backups.
- A license covers one major version: a later major version costs 50% of the regular price unless it is released within 12 months of purchase.
CherryTree
- There is no official mobile app; the project page points to SourCherry, a third-party Android project.
- Password protection is available only for single-file storage, and an unprotected copy is extracted to a temporary folder while the document is open.

Key features
AllMyNotes Organizer
- Tree of folders and notes
- Notes sit in a free-form hierarchy of folders. Deluxe adds icons, colors, priorities and checkboxes on tree items for task and project lists.
- One local database file
- All data is stored in a single .ddb file on your PC, with no cloud or account, and a portable version runs from a USB drive.
- Encryption and password protection
- Deluxe password-protects the whole file or individual folders and includes a password generator. Lite can still open protected files with the correct password.
- Global search
- Filter-as-you-type search covers every note. Deluxe adds boolean queries in a Google-like syntax and filters the results into the tree.
- Rich text editor
- Font and paragraph formatting in both editions. Deluxe adds tables, images, file attachments, links between notes, checkboxes and a spell checker.
- Alarms, backups and import
- Deluxe attaches alarms to notes and folders and makes scheduled backups. Both editions import RTF, HTML, CSV, TXT, Evernote and KeyNote files.
CherryTree
- Tree of nodes
- Notes are nodes that nest to any depth and can be rearranged by drag and drop. Text and images can link to other nodes, anchors, files, folders and web pages.
- Rich text and code
- Rich text nodes sit alongside code nodes and codeboxes with syntax highlighting, and code can be run through a configurable terminal command.
- Images, tables, files and math
- Inserts images that can be resized and rotated, simple tables with CSV import and export, embedded files and rendered LaTeX equations.
- Single-file or multi-file storage
- A document is one XML or SQLite file, or a set of files and directories. Single-file documents can be password protected using 7-Zip.
- Import and export
- Imports HTML, plain text and files from apps such as KeepNote, Zim, Tomboy, NoteCase and KeyNote, and exports to HTML, plain text and PDF.
- Find and replace across the tree
- Searches or replaces within one node, a node and its subnodes, or every node, and can build a table of contents from headings.
