| Value for money | ADeluxe is $34.00 once, for one person on any number of PCs, and the licence doesn't expire. Paid plans in this category typically start at $5.99 a month, so that's under six months of a subscription. A later major version costs 50% of the price. | AAll one-time. €7 buys the exact current version on one operating system, €17 covers one major version, and lifetime is €37 for one system or €67 for all of them, Android included. Even the dearest is about a year of a typical $5.99 a month plan here. |
| Free plan and trial | BThe Lite Edition is free with no expiry, unlimited notes and folders, and you may use it at work. But it leaves out a lot: encryption, images, file attachments, tables, alarms, the recycle bin and automatic backups. | BThere's a free Lite mode, but only on Android, and it drops encrypted documents, attachments, search and sorting. That's tight. On desktop you get a 30-day trial with everything switched on, and then you need a licence. |
| Features | BA free-form tree of folders, search that filters as you type, a rich text editor, and in Deluxe passwords on the whole file or single folders, alarms and scheduled backups. Solid for a desk. But there's no cloud sync, so moving to another PC means copying the file across. | AA tree you can reorder, with cloned branches that stay in step. Rich text, pictures and attachments saved inside the document. Tasks with due dates and repeats, tags, encrypted formats, sync, and import from more than 30 formats. Then Lua scripts and plugins with several hundred commands on top. |
| Ease of use | BWe have no store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. It's a program you install and use, with no account to make. A portable version runs straight off a USB drive. | BNo store rating to go on, so a B is our ceiling. The app itself is an install. The buying is the fiddly part: you pick between six licence types, and the key is emailed by the developer personally, which can take up to 24 hours. |
| Platforms and integrations | DWindows only. The FAQ suggests Wine-style layers for Mac and Linux and remote desktop tools for phones, which says it all. There are no mobile apps, no web version and nothing it connects to. | BWindows, macOS, Linux and several BSD and Solaris systems, plus a separate Android edition that reads the same files. Lua scripting and a built-in MCP server let other things talk to it. No iPhone or web version, and the Android app has fewer features. |
| Best for | private notes in one file on a Windows PC | one scriptable outliner across Windows, Mac and Linux |

Worth knowing
AllMyNotes Organizer
- Windows only: the FAQ suggests Wine-style layers for Linux and Mac and remote desktop tools for phones, and there are no mobile apps.
- There is no cloud sync; moving data to another computer means copying the .ddb file or following the maker's separate sync instructions.
- The free Lite Edition leaves out encryption, alarms, images, file attachments, tables, the recycle bin and automatic backups.
- A license covers one major version: a later major version costs 50% of the regular price unless it is released within 12 months of purchase.
NoteCase Pro
- The free Lite mode exists only on Android; on desktop a license is required once the 30-day trial ends.
- The cheaper licenses are tied to one operating system and to an exact version or one major version; only lifetime licenses have no version limit.
- The Android edition has a different code base with fewer features, and the site lists no iOS or web version.
- License keys are emailed by the developer personally, which can take up to 24 hours, and VAT may be added to the listed prices.
Key features
AllMyNotes Organizer
- Tree of folders and notes
- Notes sit in a free-form hierarchy of folders. Deluxe adds icons, colors, priorities and checkboxes on tree items for task and project lists.
- One local database file
- All data is stored in a single .ddb file on your PC, with no cloud or account, and a portable version runs from a USB drive.
- Encryption and password protection
- Deluxe password-protects the whole file or individual folders and includes a password generator. Lite can still open protected files with the correct password.
- Global search
- Filter-as-you-type search covers every note. Deluxe adds boolean queries in a Google-like syntax and filters the results into the tree.
- Rich text editor
- Font and paragraph formatting in both editions. Deluxe adds tables, images, file attachments, links between notes, checkboxes and a spell checker.
- Alarms, backups and import
- Deluxe attaches alarms to notes and folders and makes scheduled backups. Both editions import RTF, HTML, CSV, TXT, Evernote and KeyNote files.
NoteCase Pro
- Outliner tree in tabbed documents
- Notes form a tree that can be reordered with the mouse, branches can be cloned so copies stay in sync, and several documents open in tabs.
- Rich text, images and attachments
- Notes take rich formatting, hyperlinks and embedded pictures. Any number of files can be attached and are saved inside the document file.
- Tasks and tags
- Any note can become a task with a due date, repetition and priority, and tags are used to filter and search notes.
- Encryption and sync
- Encrypted document formats are supported natively, documents sync note by note, and an SSL-encrypted private cloud on your own server shares them between machines.
- Lua scripting and plugins
- Scripts and plugins written in Lua automate the program through several hundred API commands, and an embedded MCP server connects notes to AI agents.
- Import and export
- Imports more than 30 file formats, including Evernote, XMind, TreePad and Tomboy, and exports to formats such as HTML, RTF and OPML.
