| Value for money | APro is $89.9 for 360 days. That works out at about $7.50 a month, when tools like this usually start around $12. It buys 300 uploads every 30 days, 300 questions a day and no page limit. Image analysis and GPT-4o messages cost extra, mind. | CExpert is $9.99 a month and up to 3 people can share it, which sounds great. But it's metered: 500 pages a month, then $0.02 for every page after that. We think that's thin for the money in this category. And OCR for scanned text needs Team at $49 a user. |
| Free plan and trial | CThere's no free plan to stay on. A free account gets 10 uploads and 100 questions in total, at most 5 files and 20 questions a day, PDFs only. No card needed, so it's a fair trial. But once it's gone, it's gone. | BThere is a free plan, but it's small: 1 user, 60 pages a month and, going by the homepage, 10 answers. Enough to see how the citations work on a paper or two. Not much more. |
| Features | BIt does document chat fully: footnotes that open the passage, table or figure behind an answer, cross-page tables, formulas and scans, questions across a whole folder, and translation that keeps the layout. It only reads what you upload, though. It doesn't search for papers. | BIt does document chat fully: answers that link back to the passage, Ask All for one question across a folder, website import, and Grounded, Balanced and Creative modes for how closely it sticks to your files. Teams get roles and folder permissions. It only reads what you upload, though. |
| Ease of use | BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. Drop a file in and ask. One snag: the web app says it doesn't work on mobile and asks you to open it on a computer. | BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. Upload a folder, tick the files and ask. The thing to keep an eye on is the page meter, since going over your allowance is billed per page. |
| Platforms and integrations | BA web app with Chrome and Edge extensions and a developer API, and you can plug in your own key for models from OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek or Grok. There's no phone or desktop app on the listing. | BWeb only, and the listing shows no integrations with other apps. What lifts it is the API, which covers importing documents and asking questions, and an embed that puts a chat about a file or folder on your own web page. |
| Best for | PDFs full of tables, formulas and scans | small teams asking questions of shared files |

Key features
ChatDOC
- Cited answers with TapSource
- Each answer carries footnotes that open the passage it came from, and figures quoted in an answer can be traced back to the table or data behind them.
- Collections
- Put files in a collection, or upload a folder, and ask questions across all of them. Free accounts can hold 30 files in a collection; Pro has no limit.
- Tables, formulas and scans
- Recognizes cross-page tables and formulas and reads scanned files with OCR. The changelog says OCR became free for all users in December 2025.

- Bring your own model
- Besides the built-in models, users can enter their own API key to answer with models from OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok and others.
- Browser extensions and API
- Chrome and Edge extensions open local files and web documents in ChatDOC. A separate API sells document parsing and question answering as prepaid packages.
Humata
- Chat with your files
- Upload files or whole folders and ask questions about them. Each answer cites the relevant sections of the source documents, with highlighted links back into the file.
- Ask All across files
- Tick several files or a folder and use Ask All to put one question to all of them at once, for example to compare documents.
- Website import
- The From URL option in the upload dialog imports a website so that questions can be asked about its pages.
- Answer modes and custom prompts
- Grounded, Balanced and Creative modes set how closely answers stick to the documents, and a custom prompt can be sent along with every question.
- Team roles and permissions
- Admins invite members, assign admin or member roles, group people into teams and restrict access to folders. Department and folder permissions start at the Team plan.
- Embeds and API
- A chat view for a file or folder can be embedded in a web page, with white labeling on Enterprise. An API covers document import, conversations and questions.
